Reichenbach Falls, Meiringen

4.4
Best known as the site of Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty's final clash, Reichenbach Falls attracts fans of the Sherlock fiction series from all over the world. However, with a combined drop of 250 m (820 ft) and picturesque alpine setting, this spectacular series of waterfalls has a broad appeal. A scenic funicular ride makes the site easy to access, located just a short walk from the Reichenbachfall station. At their fullest, the waterfalls can produce a considerable spray, so be sure to wear shoes with good grip and bring a waterproof jacket. • We went at the end of July 2017, after heavy rain for a few days, and the falls were really, really impressive. You squeeze up the side of them, following a perfectly safe, but narrow pathway hewn out...  more »

  • Take the direction of Brienz train from Interlaken Ost is the preferred station meiringen is ending. It is about half an hour walking around, but there are also buses from the station. I went on the way Sherlock Holmes Museum and statue and watch. About the cute red cable car Lady operator, climbed. Front of arrived is the Reichenbach falls. Caution wet floor such as cameras is the darn spray due to the wind. Trail leads to the top of the falls 10-to 15-minute climb. Can descend a mountain walk from there we were again mountain by cable car. There was a beautiful Rainbow splashes was blown up from the waterfall mist. It is a landscape overlooking the city of great meiringen.

  • Cool waterfall in the mountain. Take the funicular up then the steps to the top for a commanding view of the valley and mountains.
  • You can almost see Holmes and Moriarty struggling with each other at the edge. Conan Doyle chose the perfect spot.
  • A fun cable car ride to the fall and then a nice walk to the fall and the surrounding area
  • This place gives you the opportunity to geek out with your inner Sherlock Holmes. Great hike or you can take the funicular to the top and hike 15min or so to the exact point where Moriarty and Sherlock stood
  • Cool waterfall, clearly of importance to Sherlock lovers. Maybe Moriarty and Holmes would have appreciated the wire fence that is there today.

Where to stay in Meiringen

Quaint Meiringen offers an authentic impression of Swiss life, complete with its chalets and pristine mountain hiking trails. On the main street at the east end of the municipality lie several mid-range hotels close to a collection of boutique shops and bakeries. This proximity will come in handy for picking up meringue treats--the town's reputed claim-to-fame and namesake. If you're working with a tighter budget, look to the neighboring town of Hasliberg, home to a cluster of guesthouses and only a short cable-car ride away.
