Aare Gorge, Meiringen

(4.7/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
Walk along the footpath at Aare Gorge to see the Aare River up close and experience its power. A product of glaciations many millennia ago, the river carves dramatically through a limestone ridge. Although less than 1.5 km (0.9 mi) in length, the walls of the gorge reach up 50 m (165 ft) on both sides. Visitors have walked the gorge for over 100 years, although the footpath, which clings to the walls, is much safer and more modern today. You can relax afterwards with a coffee and cake at one at one of the entrance restaurants. Wear sensible shoes and a waterproof jacket to shield you from the river's spray. • The crossing of the Aare Gorge is an unforgettable experience for everyone. The path is perfectly accessible and the wooden floors are not slippery despite a certain wetness - because safety is very important! An at least a light sweater is advisable in the summer or even better a light jacket to the dampness, which is felt particularly in the very narrow parts of the Gorge. The Aare Gorge is one of the top destinations in Switzerland!

  • This gorge is lovely on a rainy day, because the water will flow fast and you are protects mostly from the rain by overhanging rocks and you need a jacket anyway due to spray, have good footwear. Very...  more »

  • Was a great place perfect weather in the fall, best to leave your car at lower entrance and get bus to the top entrance and walk down to the lower entrance. Cool place to hang out on a nice day.
  • Wonderful place! You can walk through the gorge from both sides. Recommend visiting on a hot day so you can cool down in the fresh breeze of the Aare.
  • Now this is impressive! It's absolutely worth the money! Make sure you get the family ticket if you're with kids! If it's not in the heat of the summer, take a hoody or rain jacket with you, it can get wet and drippy in the caves. Take plenty of water, the next restaurant is about 30 min of walking at the end of the gorge. The drinks at the other end of the gorge where a rip-off, I think, almost sFr. 5 for a bottle! WHAT? Next time I bring my own water, thank you very much! Still, we loved every minute.
  • Beautiful, gorgeous, wild...take your pic but dont miss it! In the birthplace of the Meringue and also where Sherlock Holmes died, there is enough for a whole day of pure Suisse pleasure!
  • Lots of impressive views, lots of water. Specials attractions are explained with small signs. Make sure to bring a water-resistant coat. Most people choose to walk the Gorge back and forth, back to their parked car. If you only want to walk it one-way, you can take the bus or even the train!
