Aare Gorge, Meiringen

Categories: Historic Walking Areas, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web
Walk along the footpath at Aare Gorge to see the Aare River up close and experience its power. A product of glaciations many millennia ago, the river carves dramatically through a limestone ridge. Although less than 1.5 km (0.9 mi) in length, the walls of the gorge reach up 50 m (165 ft) on both sides. Visitors have walked the gorge for over 100 years, although the footpath, which clings to the walls, is much safer and more modern today. You can relax afterwards with a coffee and cake at one at one of the entrance restaurants. Wear sensible shoes and a waterproof jacket to shield you from the river's spray. • A group of us came here on a rainy day which was a good activity because the walk through the gorge is decently covered and the views are still spectacular.

  • My 7-year old daughter really wanted to post this comment. We visited Interlaken in August 2014. I loved walking through the rocky mountains watching the water flow past me. The rushing water was amazing and tremendously loud! It was the best Gorge I have ever been to!I loved walking past and touching the cold, metal railing on the side and peering down at the water hearing it splash about like a shark snapping about. It was so choppy and shaky it was! I actually thought I was gonna fall in. Luckily I didn't! Anyone visit Switzerland if you like ADVENTURES!!!!! (You can still visit if you aren't adventurous)
  • Gorge(ous) place with incredible views, many different opportunities for photos and easy access.
  • One of the most wonderful and easy walks I have been on in Switzerland. The walkways and tunnels that allow you to traverse through this wonder of nature are truly a crowning engineering achievement. MUST GO for anyone who loves a bit of a walk through weird and wonderful places. It is very accessible to everyone - I can only imagine how much kids will love the place.
  • Great place to visit, it is absolutely beautiful.
  • A unique experience for photographers.
