Aare Gorge, Meiringen

#1 of 6 in Things to do in Meiringen
Canyon · Tourist Spot
Walk along the footpath at Aare Gorge to see the Aare River up close and experience its power. A product of glaciations many millennia ago, the river carves dramatically through a limestone ridge. Although less than 1.5 km (0.9 mi) in length, the walls of the gorge reach up 50 m (165 ft) on both sides. Visitors have walked the gorge for over 100 years, although the footpath, which clings to the walls, is much safer and more modern today. You can relax afterwards with a coffee and cake at one at one of the entrance restaurants. Wear sensible shoes and a waterproof jacket to shield you from the river's spray. • Beauty of nature and fantastic scenery. Get there as it opens to take "people free" pictures. We started at the western entrance where staff were very friendly. You can walk to the other end where...  more »
  • We set off in the morning, and we were almost alone here. Beautiful and thanks to the sidewalk easy walk, accessible to all ages and in any weather. It's a unique experience that's worth it. Along...  more »
  • More magical in person. Feels like a scene from the movie Avatar. The walk is relatively easy (I am allergic to exercise of any form and this was doable). There are steps but plenty of benches to sit if you want to rest. There is a restaurant at the end of the walkway....so worth while and the walk back is more downhill and relatively easy. We went on a Sunday at 3pm, it was not to busy.
  • An easy walk through a gorgeous slot canyon. The path is built into the wall of the canyon and is very safe. This would be a great walk for kids. It took us about 45 minutes to complete. Your entrance ticket includes the train back to the entrance or to the train station (it's the same train, different stops).
  • Dog friendly but narrow in places. Our curious and excitable 1 year old had a great time. Good thing to note is the train the takes you back from either end so you don't have to walk there and back. 1.4km. We didn't stop for food but there are places to eat both buying and taking your own. Gorge-ous
  • Spectacular view of the River Aare in both it's forms. Calm and rapid. Nature's way of sculpture, best seen through the Gorge. Interesting facts display through the entire way. Entries to certain areas in the gorge are forbidden, clearly because of their captivating complexity staring at us invitingly. Numerous tunnels paralleling the fenced wooden pathway are equally thrilling. The way to the east side entrance was a little hefty for me but once in the gorge, couldn't complain.
  • Beautiful gorge with stunning views. Easy hike. Definitely worth the visit.
