Monte San Salvatore, Lugano

4.7
Stand on the top of Lugano at Monte San Salvatore for panoramic views of the city and the calm blue lake surrounding it. To reach the top, hike or hop on the funicular, which operates seasonally. Stop for a bite at the restaurant at the summit to take advantage of the impressive views from the veranda. You'll find the best vistas from the top of the church, but it's a significant climb. Information tablets identify the surrounding mountains, so you'll be able to tell when you're looking at the legendary Matterhorn. • Very nice place with amazing views over the entire region of Lugano and the Italy in front. In the case of clear/sunny day definitely worth the climb! We visited the small free Museum at the top as well as the chapel at the top and walked until a few viewpoints along the ascent. There is also the possibility to dine at the top (not tested restaurant).

  • Beautiful place. To the top of the mountain can be reached by funicular. For the descent there are many hiking trails of varying difficulty and length. At the top there is a cosy café-restaurant.

  • A great piece of exercise for a morning or afternoon if you feel like walking up. There is a funicular but I walked instead. Wear study shoes as it can get a little uneven. Make sure you have plenty o...  more »

  • Very beautiful place. They start the trips at 0900 in the morning and last descent is at 1800. There is a restaurant and cafe at the top.
  • Nice panoramic view, historic pathway, good food.
  • Beautiful views here overlooking Lugano.. Must go! But it can get really chilly so bring a jacket along

Where to stay in Lugano

Picturesque Lugano is known for its deep blue bay and the palm tree-lined waterfront promenade--so it only makes sense to stay close to the heart of the city, the lake. Surrounding the bay are a number of mid-range to high-priced hotels and quaint bed and breakfasts. With such an emphasis on the lake, most of the high-rise hotels have arranged their rooms and balconies in such a way that everyone has a lake view. These waterfront hotels put Lugano a step above its neighboring contenders, outbidding them in style, natural beauty, and sophistication.
