Outdoor Activity
Hike, drive, mountain bike, or take the cable car up to Monte Bre, considered one of the sunniest points in the country, with panoramic views of the nearby lake and surrounding mountains. If you drive to the summit, be prepared for many twists and curves, and be ready to stop for other cars, as the roads are very narrow. The cable car at the base of the mountain is accessible via local bus service. Be sure to check the website for the status of rail operations, since the cable cars can close in inclement weather. Use our Lugano travel itinerary maker to add Monte Bre and other attractions to your Lugano vacation plans.

  • Had an easy 45 minute trip in the hire car from Como to Lugano to specifically go on the Funicular Railway up Monte Bre. Honestly it was a bit disappointing. it was fun to do but at £25 per son for a ...  more »
  • The ascent is via funicular. For those who want to do trail is great option. But who doesn't want to, can rise and fall of funicular. Vista is stunning and yields lots of beautiful pictures. Ask at the hotel the bus leaves in front and then we climbed. Very simple.

  • Monte Brè is one of the signs characteristic of Lugano with the San Salvatore. Its ascent can be covered on foot or by funicular (I chose the second option), and once above you can admire a view so wonderful having the city. There is a small chapel, a bar/restaurant and a path that takes you to Bre-Paese (a small village very cute). Lose myself through its cobbled streets was a gift, and to enjoy the nature in solitude also. You must be at the time of the last funicular; When I arrived to pick it up it was going. There was still light and figured to make the descent on foot, but in the middle of mountain made me at night. I was lucky and in Bre-Paese I saw that there were buses (with little frequent departures) to return to Lugano, so when I saw that you had option to get home I relaxed me and I continued enjoying the ride. It had a monthly bonus to use public transport, so the return was free of charge (although on the other hand lost money from the turn of the funicular). Had it known I would have done the two journeys by bus, although the price of the ticket of the funicular was not very high for those who are interested to go see how gradually departs the city of our feet.
