Mt. Rigi, Lucerne

4.7
#3 of 9 in Parks in Lucerne
Surrounded by three lakes, Mt. Rigi once inspired painter J.M.W. Turner to create a series of works studying its changing views and blue sunrises. Known to many as the "Queen of the Mountains," the Alpine massif features a towering summit 1,798 m (5,898 ft) above sea level. A year-round tourist destination served by one of Europe's oldest mountain railways, the idyllic region draws a growing number of nature lovers with an extensive network of walking trails and ski slopes. Gear up and tackle the mountain's hiking paths all the way to the summit, or sit back and enjoy the sweeping views on the cable car that departs from the small town of Kussnacht. See Mt. Rigi and all Lucerne has to offer by arranging your trip with our Lucerne trip planner .

  • Nice hike up 1386 meters in altitude. Great views (when good weather) with plenty of interesting places to stop or side treks to take. Plenty of cows and pretty flowers. Had lunch at Rigi Kaltbad. The...  more »
  • We climbed to the mount in a rack railway those trains are special because due to the slope of the mountain they need a mechanism in the railway that mechanism looks like a zipper hence its name, above there are spectacular views of the Lake and its surroundings, then we descended by funicular

  • Rigi is very different from the Pilatus, more green, more trails, more nature! Plan a day to enjoy the view and discover a few trails! All transports are impressive (train, gondola and boat for the return trip to Lucerne). Bring with you to the trail map! Don't miss the small artisanal cheese at about 40 minutes of the Summit, the cheeses are delicious! A definite must!

  • Very beautiful place to visit in Switzerland. Mountain train is highly recommended to visit. It takes 1.5 hrs to reach here from Luzerne or Zurich. There are very few services after 6 pm so check the same before you visit. few eateries are there on the top of the mountain.

Where to stay in Lucerne

Small, historical Lucerne is big in its accommodation offerings. Surrounding the bay are plenty of mid-range and upscale hotels for those looking to splurge, putting you right downtown with easy access to sights, bars, and restaurants. If your budget is tight, look into the handful of guesthouses in the city. There are limited hostels available, and they tend to be a bit farther from the city core. Be sure to book in advance to avoid missing out.
