Bridge Tourist Spot
See Europe's oldest covered footbridge and view the collection of paintings depicting various scenes from Lucerne's rich history at Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke). An age-old bridge spanning the calm waters of the Reuss River, the 14th-century wooden structure once formed part of a defense system built to protect the city from possible enemy invasions. As you walk across it, look up to see the paintings on the interior triangular frames, added in the 17th century. Next to the bridge stands a 40 m (140 ft) tall octagonal tower, formerly a prison and torture chamber. Don't forget to bring your camera: the bridge and its tower count among Switzerland's most photographed historic monuments, drawing architecture buffs from distant corners of the world. Where to stay in Lucerne

Small, historical Lucerne is big in its accommodation offerings. Surrounding the bay are plenty of mid-range and upscale hotels for those looking to splurge, putting you right downtown with easy access to sights, bars, and restaurants. If your budget is tight, look into the handful of guesthouses in the city. There are limited hostels available, and they tend to be a bit farther from the city core. Be sure to book in advance to avoid missing out.

  • This bridge which crosses the River Reuss is spectacular.. it has had a chequered history - so a lot of what you see is fairly modern. However well worth walking across.  more »
  • Take the time to walk over the bridge. When I visited they had the outside covered with flowers so the entire walk it was a sweet smell of flowers and happy faces. Between this and the Dying Lion monu...  more »
  • This is a quaint bridge over the river. Part of the bridge has been restored after a fire and some of the fire-damaged pictures are retained to show the impact of the fire.  more »

  • The bridge is beautiful and nice spot to take pictures. The setting was absolutely picture perfect during the evenings with lights all around. We enjoyed the walk across the bridge.
  • It is old, beautiful wooden bridge with historical character. It is unique bridge of its kind with excellent geometric and artistic view.I appreciate symmetry in it. Evening walk in deam light on the Chapel bridge is quite pleasant. In the surrounding area of the bridge some beautiful swans swim freely and fearlessly which add beauty .It is at a walkable distance from main train station of Lucerne . It is also surrounded by good number of hotels.
  • What a Shame..... Pickpockets operates on this bridge. Almost got pickpocketed by a fat bearded guy on the stairs when tried to cross the bridge. And his friend around somewhere whistling monitored the situations. Careful when crossing. No security / police operates around this tourist crowded area.
  • It is one of the main attractions in Zurich. You can easily reach it by walking from the main train station. Worth visiting & doing some nice pictures!
  • One of the main attractions in Lucerne. You're transported back in time when you walk on this bridge. Unfortunately, there is a lot of graffiti however, the beautiful view of the lake makes up for it. During the winter time, there are no flowers on the side of the bridge. Still spectacular nonetheless!
