Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke), Lucerne

(4.6/5 based on 3,600+ reviews on the web)
See Europe's oldest covered footbridge and view the collection of paintings depicting various scenes from Lucerne's rich history at Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke). An age-old bridge spanning the calm waters of the Reuss River, the 14th-century wooden structure once formed part of a defense system built to protect the city from possible enemy invasions. As you walk across it, look up to see the paintings on the interior triangular frames, added in the 17th century. Next to the bridge stands a 40 m (140 ft) tall octagonal tower, formerly a prison and torture chamber. Don't forget to bring your camera: the bridge and its tower count among Switzerland's most photographed historic monuments, drawing architecture buffs from distant corners of the world. • It's a long wooden bridge that spans a narrow bit of lake Lucerne, err...it's long...it's wooden...it's old...that's it.  more »
  • This bridge under the Lake in Lucerne was burned down a few years ago (I don't remember the time). The Swiss restored this bridge. HA frames inside the bridge. The most impressive: many flowers around the bridge. You stop to enjoy the crystal-clear water and as the beautiful flowers. Several cines glide over the waters of Lake Lucerne. Our amazing. Quite romantic. Loved it!

  • We walked over this bridge with a great view of the city, the lake, and Mount Pilatus. The farmers market on either side of the bridge was incredible.  more »

  • Pretty sure this is what they based the Hogwarts bridges off! Beautiful medieval architecture in the middle of a beautiful city. Be sure to look up at the beautiful paintings in the roof.
  • A Swiss icon. Pretty in the summer. Not too exciting after a first look but you can get some nice pictures of it from both sides.
  • Loved walking through this bridge. It looks well maintained and decorated with colorful flowers. Was a nice experience feeling the beautiful and cool atmosphere of Lucerne. The swans in the river were friendly as well!
  • Lovely romantic and historical bridge. Nice in day or night time. Beautiful flowers
  • This is the main and most beautifull bridge to cross over from the Old Town to the Lucern Main Train Station. With murals above you walk many times and take photos, each photo will definitely be a memorabe one over time.
