Chapel Bridge, Lucerne

Must see · Bridge · Tourist Spot
See Europe's oldest covered footbridge and view the collection of paintings depicting various scenes from Lucerne's rich history at Chapel Bridge. An age-old bridge spanning the calm waters of the Reuss River, the 14th-century wooden structure once formed part of a defense system built to protect the city from possible enemy invasions. As you walk across it, look up to see the paintings on the interior triangular frames, added in the 17th century. Next to the bridge stands a 40 m (140 ft) tall octagonal tower, formerly a prison and torture chamber. Don't forget to bring your camera: the bridge and its tower count among Switzerland's most photographed historic monuments, drawing architecture buffs from distant corners of the world. • An amazing icon of Lucerne with an interesting history—part of it tragic with the fire that destroyed half of the bridge in the 90s. Don’t forget to look upwards as you walk the length of the bridge.....  more »
  • Wonderful place. The best town I have ever seen in Switzerland. Would like to come here again and again))
  • Fantastic Chapel Bridge with amazing paintings and hand carved pieces created by the human hand. Truly another beautiful place that will be remembered in sight, feel and joy❤️
  • One of the oldest wooden bridges! Quite strong and sturdy. Definitely looks amazing. Worth visiting
  • Such a lovely bridge built in 1300 and still stays strong. Note that there is renovation work started on one end of the bridge, so you enter from a metal raised entrance rather than the actual entrance itself.
  • Serenity at its best. The weather and the history. The Stories that the place tells you. Everything makes it good. I would recommend it to anyone's travel list
