Altstadt Luzern, Lucerne

(4.5/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web)
One of Switzerland's best-preserved medieval quarters, Altstadt Luzern attracts visitors with its maze of narrow streets, cobbled passages, and public squares. Located just north of the Reuss River and surrounded by the remains of Lucerne's medieval city walls and towers, the old quarter features an idyllic lakeside promenade flanked by a string of half-timbered buildings with elaborately decorated fronts. The pedestrianized Old Town contains most of the city's major cultural attractions, including the oldest wooden footbridge in Europe. This easily recognizable landmark serves as a convenient starting point for sightseeing tours. • Visited during the bus tour at Christmas. Were in the morning and to our delight weather suddenly improved and shone through the blue sky in fine weather, the city began to look even more elegant and hospitable. Many interesting old buildings in different styles: Baroque, Rococo, art nouveau and Renaissance ... Liked the paintings and frescos on the facades of some of them. Graceful swans sailed across the Lake. At its opposite shore progljadyvala snow-covered peak of Mount Pilatus two wonderful covered bridge with ancient frescoes-Chapel and Shproerbrjukke. And all this peaceful picture nice city filled the heart of positivity and joy. Linger here longer.

  • The old town of Lucerne is one of the most beautiful in Switzerland. The facades of some houses trace the medieval history through frescoes and absolutely splendid decorations! The alleys are littered with shops sometimes very original, nothing is missing. There is also an extraordinary amount of restaurants, pubs and bars of all kinds. The street along the river Reuss (river which joins the Lake, ridden by the famous medieval wooden bridge symbolizing the city of Lucerne) is littered with terraces allowing guests to stroll all enjoying unusual and beautiful views. Some signs of institutions or stores are simply exceptional and magnificent. Downside: you better like Swiss watches because there are more shops of Lucerne watches as boats on the Lake. No brand of watchmaking is not missing (to peel it...) and if you don't speak either Chinese or Japanese, you may feel foreign inside!

  • We immensely enjoyed walking in altstadt Luzern. The streets were very clean, and there were many interesting things to see. Most everything is closed on Sundays though.
