#9 of 12 in Museums in Lucerne
The Alpineum is a museum and diorama of the Alps in Lucerne, Switzerland.HistoryIn 1885, Ernst Hodel senior purchased the building that formerly housed the Lion-Monument-Museum. His plan was to make a permanent exhibition of the large scale landscape paintings of the Alps that he loved. With the help of his son Ernst Hodel junior, he realized a series depicting the Alps, which debuted in May 1901 under the name Alpineum. The paintings occupy a surface of more than five hundred square meters, offering beautiful and unique insight into the world of the Swiss Alps.Despite Ernst Hodel the younger passing in 1955, the Alpineum continued operation under his descendants and is still open today.

  • is located in the garden of the glaciers, large cottage on several floors and explain with pictures and texts the good evolution of the coolers of the last centuries masses showcasing photos, pretty well popularized as information but it is not a Museum explaining the geology of glaciers... There is also a giant model of the largest Alpine relief with the Central Switzerland so the city of Lucerne late 18 th century on the floor you will find small models of different houses of Interesting to see Switzerland but not essential (dogs not allowed)

  • A short break away from the hussle of Luzern‘s Löwendenkmal this small museum gives a good impression upon the beginnings of 3D style paintings. Rather small collection for the price attached to it.  more »
  • IMHO the souvenir store with its tiny museum is expensive for what you get and not really overly special.  more »

  • Place which deserves a visit because it is the first panopticon installation in a museum.
  • A little bit special museum and be a scenic spot conjunct to lowendenkmal.
  • Parts of awesome luzern
  • Nice place near cryin lion monument
  • Not enough effort to involve people like audio guides or better showcases for the stereoscopes, although the stereoscope collection is to die for!

Where to stay in Lucerne

Small, historical Lucerne is big in its accommodation offerings. Surrounding the bay are plenty of mid-range and upscale hotels for those looking to splurge, putting you right downtown with easy access to sights, bars, and restaurants. If your budget is tight, look into the handful of guesthouses in the city. There are limited hostels available, and they tend to be a bit farther from the city core. Be sure to book in advance to avoid missing out.
