#1 of 9 in Things to do in Gruyeres
Set the clock back a few centuries with a visit to Castle of Gruyeres, situated in the verdant countryside against the backdrop of western Switzerland's majestic mountains. Constructed in the 13th century, the castle served as home to a long succession of local counts, who controlled this region from the 11th to the 16th centuries. Converted into a museum in 1938, the turreted castle houses a large collection of tapestries, paintings, and period furniture, allowing visitors to discover eight centuries of the region's artistic and cultural heritage. Watch the short multimedia film about the history of the castle and explore the footpaths winding their way around the property. Purchase tickets upon entrance; consider a combined ticket that gets you access to one of the nearby museums. Guided visits of the castle are available at an extra cost. • The castle is at the top of the village of Gruyères. It was built around 1247 and has been maintained and/or restored over the centuries. The castle is well laid out and the views are spectacular.  more »
  • The castle is on a hilltop, with the old town with it. Lovely old town buildings. Several restaurants as well. The castle itself well worth looking round. Interesting facts and history.  more »
  • We visited the castle of Gruyeres far and wide and found that it was taken up and arranged really well. Nothing has been left to chance, the respect of some medieval parts and the exploitation of some interior areas transformed into places of worship for art with exhibitions of paintings. Both outside and inside everything is in order and well restored. Along the inside of the castle, it is noted that it was actually lived almost until the last century by the noble family owner. In fact you can admire the furniture and frescoes reminiscent of a renaissance period. For those who have young children and/or teenagers, a booklet is given to the entrance to search for the intruder. It is a treasure hunt destined to search for symbols represented by animals depicted inside the castle on canvas, armour, frescoes and glass. The child must find them all and understand what are the intruders present in the booklet. In fact with this game, the visit for the little ones is much more interesting and makes it not be lost even a particular. Congratulations to the managers of this castle.

  • Great place for half day trip. My family and I enjoyed atmosphere there. Nice museums, good movie about castle's history. Interesting cafes nearby. Highly recommend.
  • Pity the clouds were there but the pretty little castle was nice to see. Even better if we could have walked around the outside of it more. There is a fascinating alien bar up there too for alien fans !
  • It's a wonderful place. You must visit it. The view was great. Inside of it you can find different stores. You can buy chocolates or souvenir. You can eat a decent meal or drink a coffee. There is also a museum inside but I didn't visit it.
  • Beautiful castle worth a visit. There is a short 20 min movie about the history of the town that was well made and entertaining. The castle itself is interesting to visit, well maintained and great views on the valleys and surrounding mountains. You can have combined tickets with the cheese factory. The paintings of some of the rooms are beautiful.
  • Wonderful castle and the town itself. The building was built between 1270 and 1282, following the typical square plan of the fortifications in Savoy. It was the property of the Counts of Gruyères until the bankruptcy of the Count Michel in 1554. Many interesing activities for children around, chocolate and cheese factories, for example.
