Trip Planner: Europe / Switzerland / Canton of Fribourg / La Gruyere / Gruyeres / Castle of Gruyeres
Set the clock back a few centuries with a visit to Castle of Gruyeres, situated in the verdant countryside against the backdrop of western Switzerland's majestic mountains. Constructed in the 13th century, the castle served as home to a long succession of local counts, who controlled this region from the 11th to the 16th centuries. Converted into a museum in 1938, the turreted castle houses a large collection of tapestries, paintings, and period furniture, allowing visitors to discover eight centuries of the region's artistic and cultural heritage. Watch the short multimedia film about the history of the castle and explore the footpaths winding their way around the property. Purchase tickets upon entrance; consider a combined ticket that gets you access to one of the nearby museums. Guided visits of the castle are available at an extra cost. Do not forget the path of the ramparts which offers a magnificent view on a wonderfully well maintained garden. Remarkable views of the entire region from the Castle Park. Do not hesitate to visit everything.
Amazing also with bed weather. There close one of the best and tipical restaurant where you can taste a fantastic fondue in a very romantic place... only three table, wood ceiling, stone wall and one small window looks on the middle-age square.... you have try... it's an emotion!
The castle itself was nice but for many of the rooms, which were supposed to be decorated as the castle would have been used when it was a stately manor, there was random pieces of modern art that clashed with the rest of the room. For example, the dining room table had a piece made of toner that had been nailed together at close 90° angles and painted white. There seemed to be no rhyme nor reason to these pieces and it was very off-putting. The gardens and grounds were very nice though and it explained some of the history of the castle.
We did a quick, self guided tour just before leaving town and I'm glad we did. The castle is a beautiful building with interesting history and great exhibits, both modern and historic. They had several terrific art exhibits on display while we were there. It was an unexpected bonus.
Price for the entrance is definitely fair. You get some really great views and there are plenty of rooms displaying art, furniture and arms from the castle's history. Also contemporary paintings of local artists are shown.
The views are spectacular and you can walk and go around a truly medieval place. A bit crowded but still good.

Where to stay in La Gruyere
Along the cobblestone streets of medieval Gruyères, you'll find a number of very expensive hotels, all featuring the picturesque facades and impressive geranium displays that make the town so charming. If you're willing to travel a bit further for your world-renowned cheese, look to the downtown core of Bulle, just west of Gruyères, which is more diverse in its accommodations. Here you'll find a selection of more modestly priced hotels, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses. Alternatively, on the outskirts of town, you can often find apartments for rent.
