Castle of Gruyeres, Gruyeres

(4.7/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Set the clock back a few centuries with a visit to Castle of Gruyeres, situated in the verdant countryside against the backdrop of western Switzerland's majestic mountains. Constructed in the 13th century, the castle served as home to a long succession of local counts, who controlled this region from the 11th to the 16th centuries. Converted into a museum in 1938, the turreted castle houses a large collection of tapestries, paintings, and period furniture, allowing visitors to discover eight centuries of the region's artistic and cultural heritage. Watch the short multimedia film about the history of the castle and explore the footpaths winding their way around the property. Purchase tickets upon entrance; consider a combined ticket that gets you access to one of the nearby museums. Guided visits of the castle are available at an extra cost. Put Castle of Gruyeres into our Gruyeres tour planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Very nice castle, good setup. The town is very nice and good for a local cuisine meal. If you are near the region is worth visiting. Arriving by train is easy, though requires a 1.3 Km walk uphill. Th...  more »

  • This castle is beautiful. It's history dates back to 1200 AD with previous history to be postulated. We enjoyed a surprisingly entertaining multimedia spectacle- it was the perfect introduction before touring around the chateau. The various rooms tell a story and show different moments of history. The garden is beautiful and well kept. Views from the rampart are so fun- I loved imagining that I was living centuries ago strolling through the chateau watching guard. Finally the staff were friendly and helpful. I'm glad that I paid to get the full experience of this chateau rather than simply seeing its exterior.
  • Nice Castle..well kept...to visit for adult and/or children. The Castel is placed at the end of the small community Gruyeres...it's necessary to walk 10 min for reaching the entrance from the latest parking zone. It last about 1h inside the castle and a walk outside the ring path around the Castle is really recommended also if it's dark or cold...a good feeling. Price is 12 chf for adults and 4 chf for children over 6 yrs old.
  • A beautiful small "castle" villa which is one of the best in Switzerland to visit, although its inconsequential compared to others in Europe.
  • One of the most beautiful castles in Switzerland. It's worth the visit. Possible to buy a combined ticket with HR Giger Museum (Alien creator).
  • A very cool place! Loved walking the beautiful grounds. The 20 minute video that you can opt for was very informative, although I wouldve loved some sort of audiotour or guided tour. But, very stunning!
