Cathedrale de St-Pierre, Geneva

4.3
#1 of 10 in Historic Sites in Geneva
For panoramic views over the city and its lake, climb the northern tower of Cathedrale de St-Pierre. Known mostly as the adopted home church of John Calvin (one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation), the cathedral dates back to the 12th century, its architecture an eclectic mix of styles. The archaeological site beneath the cathedral, excavated over the last few years, reveals the city's rich history and explores the origins of Christianity in this part of Europe. Take the underground passage connecting the cathedral to the adjacent museum, dedicated to presenting the historical significance of the Reformation. Audio guides are available in English, German, and French. If you'd prefer a guided tour, check the website, where you'll also find information about upcoming live organ performances. • The Cathedral itself is relatively simple, but to basement, there are historical findings. It's worth but high in the towers to climb. From the above open wonderful views over the city and Lake Geneva. Admission 4, 50e. In the church you can pay cash, the euro also go. At the checkout is a good selection of post cards in different sizes (1.50-4 francs)

  • Nice place to view the whole Geneva! Only pay 5CHF(you can also pay 5 Euro) you could climb up the tower. The postcards showed here are also amazing!
  • Great views of Geneva! This is definitely a must see if you are visiting Geneva. Located in the Old Town, which is already so beautiful, going to this cathedral is a great way to spend a few hours. For 5CHF (cash only), you can visit the North and South Towers of the cathedral and get unparalleled views of Geneva. Amazing!
  • Another place that is definitely worth visiting in Geneva. The architecture of the cathedral is really interesting, and you can enjoy a great view of the city while you are there, as the cathedral is up on a hill.
  • This is a must visit. The cathedral is such a piece of beautiful architecture, one cannot help to admire and notice the details and all the fabulous stain glasses. On top of it, one can pay a small fee and go up to the top of the towers and see the city and the lake, 360 degrees. What fantastic views!
  • Don't bother coming if you have a baby or handicap. The access is non existent. Go enjoy another city. If you make it here you'll realize what a waste it is. Switzerland has much more to offer. This country is beautiful, but Geneva is really lacking!

Where to stay in Geneva

In the elegant city of Geneva, a little shuteye doesn't come cheap. A number of relatively expensive hotels surround the lakefront, a prime location for visitors here; note that these tend to fill up for conferences and trade shows, so plan accordingly. More budget-minded travelers can look into options closer to the airport, which is a quick 15-minute ride on public transport into the city. While there a very few family-owned guesthouses and hotels, there are a handful of hostels--though these too are priced pretty steep. You can also find more affordable options in the outlying cities of Annemasse and Gaillard.
