UNESCO-Altstadt von Bern, Bern

4.8
Stroll through UNESCO-Altstadt von Bern, a World Heritage Site with arcaded walkways arranged along streets dotted with hundreds of public fountains. Although most of its structures underwent massive restoration in the 18th century, the old neighborhood retains much of its original layout and character. Home to Switzerland's tallest cathedral, the atmospheric Old Town stretches along a U-shaped peninsula, surrounded on three sides by the Aare River. Begin your walk through medieval Bern at the Old Town's landmark clock tower, featuring one of the world's earliest examples of animatronic technology. To see what the locals call "the longest running act in show biz," stand in front of the clock on the hour. There is a old town above the bear moat. There is even the old town 'down' on the Aare River." But in any case are both worthwhile. Stroll up to the bear pit down by the Spitalgasse and visit the many small shops. Or but the Aare River walk along to the Dählhölzli. When given endurance you can combine the two. , To stop and drink a beer there are opportunities many (z.B tram depot).

Where to stay in Bern

In historic Bern, the bulk of the accommodation offerings are confined to the peninsula, where the Old Town or "Altstadt" is located. Staying here gives you the convenience of being within walking distance to everything--which will come in handy in this generally car-free area. Throughout the Old Town you'll find a number of mid-range three-star hotels complete with their original 19th-century characteristics. A couple hostels and pensions round out the options here, though these tend to be a bit more expensive than one might expect. Outside of the Old Town, there are a few hotels with cheaper rates, though you compromise on convenience and atmosphere. The city also boasts a few stunning four- and five-star hotels, should your budget be forgiving.
