The Natural History Museum of Bern is a museum in Bern, Switzerland. In its teaching and research it cooperates closely with the University of Bern. It is visited by around 100,000 people yearly.HistoryThe museum is owned by the Bürgergemeinde of Bern. It was officially founded in 1832. It is located on Bernastrasse, in the Kirchenfeld quarter, in a building that was erected between 1932 and 1934, opened in 1936 and expanded several times since then. Previously the exhibits were kept in a building on Hodlerstrasse built from 1878-81 and demolished in 1936; and earlier still, in the library gallery of a former college building.CollectionThe museum is known for its set of over 220 life-sized dioramas, featuring preserved animals from Switzerland, Africa and Asia; it also owns a collection of minerals from the Alpine region, samples of gold discovered at various locations in Switzerland, meteorites, a large stock of invertebrates, and Switzerland's largest collection of animal skeletons and bones.Mammal DioramasThe dioramas originate from a collection of big game animals from Africa, bagged by the London-based Bernese painter and game hunter Bernhard von Wattenwyl (together with his daughter Vivienne) during an expedition in 1923-24. A total of 130 of these animals are on display, in 33 dioramas along two darkened corridors. The dioramas are designed and furnished according to the animals' natural habitat.

  • Apart from the exhibition temporary current "Apocalypse - an end without end", especially for adults and adolescents, the Museum presents many facets of the past and present life on Earth. That are interested in fossils or current animals, the subjects are covered in a pleasant way. Of course, some dioramas date from the last century, but they are very realistic even if they are not connected. The section dedicated to the history of Barry, the heroic dog of the great St. Bernard hospice, presents to her only a purpose of visit. We can even take a picture with him in a setting you can choose. Children are always an interest, and in case of rain, it's a wonderful place to visit with your family.

  • Spent a enjoyable couple of hours wandering the halls of the museum. Not being able to read the German explanations wasn't too much of a hinderance. Might help tourists if there was more English cards...  more »

Where to stay in Bern

In historic Bern, the bulk of the accommodation offerings are confined to the peninsula, where the Old Town or "Altstadt" is located. Staying here gives you the convenience of being within walking distance to everything--which will come in handy in this generally car-free area. Throughout the Old Town you'll find a number of mid-range three-star hotels complete with their original 19th-century characteristics. A couple hostels and pensions round out the options here, though these tend to be a bit more expensive than one might expect. Outside of the Old Town, there are a few hotels with cheaper rates, though you compromise on convenience and atmosphere. The city also boasts a few stunning four- and five-star hotels, should your budget be forgiving.
