Clock Tower - Zytglogge, Bern

Observation Deck · Landmark
An elaborate structure with moving automatons, Clock Tower - Zytglogge remains one of the capital city's major architectural landmarks, its spire a dominant point in the Old Town's skyline. Part of the city's World Heritage-listed medieval quarter, the 13th-century structure once served as both a prison and guard tower. Virtually unchanged since its contruction nearly eight centuries ago, the tower features a giant astronomical clock, its dial designed in the form of an astrolabe. Every hour on the hour there is an impressive display of early animatronic technology, involving the appearance of a gilded bell-striker representing the Greek personification of time. Our Bern trip planning site makes visiting Clock Tower - Zytglogge and other Bern attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • It adds to the character of the beautiful old town. It's cool to see, but not as impressive as it seems. Old town is beautiful, so you should go there and see it.  more »
  • Compared to the clock towers in Amsterdam and Munich, this clock didn’t do much at all on the hour. It’s still beautiful though and still worth visiting.  more »
  • Charming streets of Bern with beautiful Swiss architecture all around and stunning clock tower right at centre of the street with fountain, I strongly recommend you to see it.  more »
  • A wonderful place, just like all of Switzerland. Let me tell you, Switzerland is an incredible place, and very beautiful. Beautiful. I recommend you go. If you are going to go in these difficult times, please, take safety measures.
  • Its historic. Wish that there was some explanation.
  • Such a lovely place in the old beautiful city of Bern
  • One of the most recognizable symbols of Bern, although it is pretty incomprehensible to most ordinary people! This landmark medieval tower was built in the early 13th century with Baroque and Gothic elements. It has served the city as guard tower, prison, clock tower, centre of urban life and civic memorial.
  • Really worth the walk. Nice musicians outside too.
