San Bernardino Pass, Bellinzona

(5/5 based on 25+ reviews on the web)
San Bernardino Pass is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting the Hinterrhein and the Mesolcina valleys between Thusis and Bellinzona . Located in the far eastern side of the Western Alps it is not to be confused with the Great St. Bernard Pass and the Little St. Bernard Pass. The top of the pass represents both the Italo-German language frontier and the watershed between the Po basin and the Rhine basin. The route first became important as a mule track in the fifteenth century when the route between Thusis and Splügen was known as the Via Mala. A road for wheeled vehicles was opened in 1770; this road was significantly improved between 1821 and 1823, financed in part by the Kingdom of Sardinia, keen to improve a trade route connecting Genoa and Piedmont to the Graubünden that was not directly controlled by Austria.

  • If you fancy making a really nice trip by car/motorbike or mountain lovers and you also want to take a walk, the San Bernardino pass is the right place for you. In Bellinzona Gotthard/San Bernardino at the fork take for second and just before the tunnel, take the exit to the town of San Bernardino. As soon as you exit turn left immediately and begin the ascent. Attention that is usually closed to cars between October and March/April, subject to weather conditions. When the transit is prevented for vehicles, you may face a long walk to get to the top on foot, retracing some stretches the old road drawn by the military of Rome. The ascent from the side of San Bernardino is very charming landscapes talking. There are several points where it is worth stopping and make different photographs. Once at the top the bar/restaurant also offers some parking spaces. For the top one first rather large pond. If you don't want to walk a bit, but nothing particularly challenging, you can encounter numerous smaller and larger pools, used in summer also from animals grazing land for abbeversarsi. The peak is quite a sight, being also characterized by very large heaps, recently used by tourists to leave "sculptures" that now represent one of the most striking attractions pass itself. If you decide to proceed along the road opposite the Valley is quite narrow and the road goes down (or salt) rather quickly to take you from parts of Splugen and Nufenen.

  • Switzerland Alps 2065 m mountain pass. South of San Bernardino Village Gate, preached in the area in the 15th century driver remarked "Siena is taking from Saint from Berdardino. There are many tourist attractions in the village and also. The combination of spectacular snow and winter and all year round tourist attraction. When winter conditions could, trapped at an earlier time way too severe so in 1967 under the Causeway opened 6 km-long tunnel transportation facilitated, today is clear. We Italy Milan, Como, Lugano, via Switzerland, passing through Germany from the Alps-we went to Friedrichshafen. Pristine nature, snow, Forests, on the outskirts of the Villages of the Alps, a very nice journey, accompanied by. Excursion program, if you set remain in San Bernardino would be even better.

  • You reach into the climb (with a bit of switchbacks) before entering the tunnel of San Bernardino. Up to 2000 m in height (about) and you park near the pond. From here you can start with some walks, more or less challenging, with spectacular views. For example, in just over half an hour's walk not too complicated you can get to a vantage point from which you can see the whole Valley and the village of San Bernardino (with its Lake and dam). Beautiful!
