Basel Munster, Basel

4.6
#1 of 135 in Things to do in Basel
Situated on a hill above the Rhine River, the medieval Basel Munster remains one of the city's major landmarks, its duo of slim towers a dominant feature in the Old Town's skyline. Erected gradually between 1019 and 1500, the building combines the finest elements of the Romanesque and Gothic styles, its colored roof tiles visible from distant corners of the city. Inside you can see a 19th-century lectern carved out of sandstone and a crypt containing the tombs of Basel's early bishops. For a bird's-eye view of the city, the river, and the Black Forest in the distance, climb the church's southern tower. • The Cathedral is a stunning beauty. Who is the Basel can only go to contemplate. It's a very imposing building.

  • We went to visit the Cathedral but it was closed and in restoration. Anyway you can see part of the exterior and the cloisters.

  • The Basel Cathedral is worth a visit from the outside and the inside, and the cloister is wonderful. Like the Vista of the Palatinate is unique.

  • Beautiful from both the inside and the outside. The view on the other side over the river is great. It's very nice to walk through the church halls and see all of the wonderful art and sculptures further inside. There was a great free concert here when I came on a Saturday at noon - Stravinsky's Firebird played on organ.
  • Very beautiful building in Basel. The building is huge and the detail is stunning. You are free to look inside. Definitely one of the top highlights to see when here. The outisde is as pretty as the inside.
  • Basel's English Dentist Dr Garry Bonsall reviews Basel Minster "Our most wonderful cathedral, building took over 500 years! Most of it survived the Basel earthquake of 1356 and the reformation when the Bishop was kicked out in 1539, making Basel city a town once more. Built on the hallowed Pfalz, the site of a pagan place of adoration and a later Roman temple but the best is the view from either tower ...
  • Beautiful! I fell in love with it when I first moved here, and now, nearly two years later, I'm just as smitten! I see it everyday when I cross Mittlerebrücke and wouldn't know what to do with my eyes if it were somehow gone! I've been to the top several times and enjoy it very much. Totally worth the hype as a Basel "must-see"!

Where to stay in Basel

Business-oriented Basel offers an overwhelming amount of mid-range hotels catering to its business clientele. The city fills up during conferences and events, so be sure to plan accordingly. There are a number of guesthouses and bed and breakfasts too, but they tend to be pretty pricey. You'll find a handful of budget-friendly hostels just south of the city core. Keep in mind that as you move toward the outskirts of town for affordable accommodation, proximity to the train stations will be key. The good news is that a number of the hotels include public transport passes with the cost of a room.
