#1 of 9 in Things to do in Andermatt
Schöllenen Gorge is a gorge formed by the upper Reuss in the Swiss canton of Uri between the towns of Göschenen to the north and Andermatt to the south. It provides access to the St Gotthard Pass.Enclosed by sheer granite walls, its road and railway require several spectacular bridges and tunnels, of which the most famous is a stone bridge known as the Teufelsbrücke .GeologyThe lower Urseren marks the boundary of the Aar massif with the autochthonous sediment of the Gotthard nappe ("Urseren-Zone"). In Altkirch quarry, on the southern end of the gorge, Triassic and Jurassic sediments are exposed. In the Schöllenen Gorge (at the Urnerloch tunnel), the Reuss enters the cristalline Aar massif (Aar granite), the gorge itself being an exemplary late alpine fluvial Water gap.HistoryEarly historyThe name of the gorge is from Rumantsch *scalinae ("stairs, steps"); recorded in German as Schellenden in 1420. It formed the upper limit of Alemannic settlement in the Alps prior to the 12th century, and the border between the bishoprics of Constance and Raetia Curensis.

  • Actually this bridge is one of many, found in Switzerland. But if you can hear the legend of the trade with the devil, the bridge begins to develop a very special value. In the winter, you can visit them only from the main street. The snow is gone but there is to photograph a beautiful small flat with a small tunnel to it from many sides.

  • We walked from the old town to Teufelsbrucke. A bit confusing to get all the way to the monument, but we'll worth it!  more »

  • Really nice place to visit with a lot of historic backgrounds. If you're interested in historical topics then it's definitely a place to visit. Really nice story behind that bridge about the devil and how he was linked by human. ☺️
  • Stop and enjoy the old bridge underneath, hear the tale of a tricky devil who built it, walk the secret tunnel passage to see the waterfall and the alpine train up close. The cafe serves weak coffee and bad sandwiches, both too expensive. Also don't forget to do the slavic squat like the Devil himself.
  • Great experience. If you are in this area of Switzerland then its must to see place.
  • Very intimidating and it was a good find. Off beat place for travelers
  • Must stop place on your way between passes.
