Aigle Castle, Aigle

(4.3/5 based on 75 reviews on the web)
Aigle Castle is a castle in the municipality of Aigle of the Canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.HistoryThe Barons of Aigle were first mentioned in 1179. At that time they had a small fortification, that became the center of the modern castle, along the road over the Col du Pillon and Col des Mosses passes of the Rhone. However, only traces of this first castle have been archaeologically discovered. Some time before 1200, the Barons of Aigle ended up as vassals of the powerful Counts of Savoy. In 1232, Count Thomas of Savoy granted Aigle as a fief to the brothers Jacob and Peter of Saillon in exchange for their ancestral castle in Valais. The Saillon family seems to have been closely related with the barons of Aigle. In the second half of the 13th Century, Aigle expanded and received a city charter. The castle was rebuilt, with a fortified donjon and a curtain wall.In the 14th Century, the Lords of Compey inherited the rights of the Saillon family. They were also vassals of the Counts of Savoy and made Aigle into their headquarters. They added turrets and in 1450 built a massive tower in the south corner. This tower was an example of late French Donjon architecture.

  • Most of the castle has been renewed inside and it has been adapted for the wine museum, so if you expect to see a castle inside, this is not the place.
  • The extensive exhibition at this Chateau deals with wine: cultivation and enjoyment such as history of viticulture in the region will also be addressed. All the senses are addressed (you do about typical wine notes in a taste or feel the pressure of different wine presses on the hand), there are movies and also multimedia stations, which playfully convey Weinlultur. The exhibits are presented as zahl - how varied and this still appealing. But also about the history of the beautiful Château can some spread over several rooms information. During a tour comes one again on interesting, not only Früneuzeitliches, but about graffiti of an occupant of the building used as a prison until the 70s. Now this former prison space is especially interesting, he makes comprehensible the different layers of the wall decoration visible and to another the considerations of the exhibition organisers. Here is much in there for visitors. But most only in French.

  • It is a castle from the 12th century, passing the centuries served as a prison and today is the icon of wine in Switzerland already history which is turned into a museum dedicated to wine. I had no luck finding it open, but if the store, where you sell the wines of the region. Only I could photograph its main courtyard and surrounding... Is very beautiful; will be the subject of wines I conveying something totally spiritual by everything attributed to him; but me causo pleasant well-being discover construction is, in fact it is easy to do so since from the highway it is striking. You have to learn on the internet days and opening hours why not this week's available. The person who is at the front of the store, a very nice girl, we explained what it was and us recomendo featured more in the region of Vaud wines. The village in where is the castle is called Aigle, which by the way, is not private but how me captive...

  • Beautiful on the outside though disappointing in the inside, the chateaux d'aigle really surprised me! I was very excited visiting this beautiful castle though in the inside there main feature is dead and tortured animals covering the entire of the rooms and as I am a vegetarian and strong lover of animals it was very disheartening to see. The interior is neither very impressing as the modern design they have done is quite ugly. Overall it is nice to take a photo of it on the outside but I would not waste your money on taking a tour. Thank you for reading my comment and I wish you guys much luck in your journey.
