Ales Stenar, Ystad

(4.4/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
See the colossal stones that form one of the most impressive monuments of ancient Nordic culture at Ales Stenar. Known as the Stonehenge of Sweden, the monument stands on the Skane coast in the south side of the country. The site features 59 large boulders arranged in a ship-like formation. The stones at the front and in the back are larger than the others, clearly representing the bow and stern of a ship. The monument dates back to the early Middle Ages, even before the time when Vikings ruled the waves of northern Europe. The tranquil fields, hiking trails, and sea views surrounding the monument offer a great setting for a day outdoors. The sight has its own parking area. • This is definitely a historical place to visit. Beautiful scenic walk, pretty windy but lots of photo opts. Take a picnic with you or you can get a coffee and snack down by the harbor.  more »
  • I live in Österlen and have therefore been at Ales Stenar a 10 number of times when I turned around friends. The problem with the stones is that they are far too popular, 800 000 visited them last year. The first few times they left me unmoved. It's hard to get a feel for them when there are 2 bus loads German pensioners and 50 screaming children. A duggig autumn day, I went up there and was himself with stones. It was an absolutely amazing experience, it is a beautiful and magical place. To understand just why they put the ship pursued right there. So the definitive Council is avoiding the season or find odd times. Then it will be a great experience. Please bring a picnic

  • We were surprised at how little was going on here. The camper could be parked on the spacious parking space, through the picturesque village it comes up go to the ales Stenar. Shortly before noon, one is pretty much alone among sheep, only a short time later more tourists to us have joined. Who doesn't shy away from relegation can go back on the Pebble Beach and buy fresh fish at the port.

  • A very unique set of stones placed on a hill outside a small harbour in southern Sweden. The monument is formed as a ship pointing towards winter and summer solstice. The monument is about 15 minutes walk from the nearest parking lot.
  • Nice historical place. Nice view of Baltic
  • Nice area at the sea, the stones are ok, certainly not comparable with Hengestone ;) In any case, dont miss out to go to the harbour, there are a lots of fish restaurants!
  • Fantastic views and an equally fantastic stone ship. You can bring a picnic up here and stay a whole day. Spectacular sunsets.
  • Mini Stonehenge. Beautiful views
