Ales Stenar, Ystad

4.4
#1 of 12 in Things to do in Ystad
See the colossal stones that form one of the most impressive monuments of ancient Nordic culture at Ales Stenar. Known as the Stonehenge of Sweden, the monument stands on the Skane coast in the south side of the country. The site features 59 large boulders arranged in a ship-like formation. The stones at the front and in the back are larger than the others, clearly representing the bow and stern of a ship. The monument dates back to the early Middle Ages, even before the time when Vikings ruled the waves of northern Europe. The tranquil fields, hiking trails, and sea views surrounding the monument offer a great setting for a day outdoors. The sight has its own parking area. • After a long bike ride from Ystad along the coast and rolling countryside to Ales Stenar cycled (20 km). After a short climb to the top of the Hill is there Ales Stenar ... a stone group in the form of a Viking boat. There was a small bit of information on a plate, but no ability for a tour or information which you could ask someone. The strong wind and the beautiful view are great, with a nice story is the place also more interesting. It's also fun to go down to the sea to descend if you are up for scrambling.

  • The wind was so strong when we was there and we felt like we were actually sailing on the sea.. But the stones are placed in the ground and they have been there for hundreds of years and that is what ...  more »
  • ALE's stones with its magnificent nature is something to return to each skane vacation. Have something to tie on your head if you are sensitive to wind here blows it always. Then go down to Kåseberga Harbour and eat smoked fish, or fried herring if you like it.

  • An old ship shaped stone arrangement... Good activity on a sunny day.. usually windy and gets cold if you don't have proper clothes.. nice harbor closer by with cafes
  • This is a historical heritage, not a playground for kids from parents who don't even teach them what this is and what respect is! Children jumping on it and playing games in it is not the way how the few heritages of our ancestors should be treaten. And also you are not able to take any good photo of it because of this. Build a fence around it or at least more information shields about what this is, and how it should be treaten.
  • an old historic site...at a lovely location....neae a small Fisher community.. it is a must visit if you are around the area... great to be visited on a sunny day. resutraunts are nearby which serve great seafood...in season boats are docked ...be sure to visit before 4 pm....closes early ...
  • Marvellous, nice path (might be a bit harsh for elderly people though), breath taking place and view over the sea.
  • Very nice and relaxing place. Recommend for tourists.
