Gotland Museum, Visby

4.5
#1 of 12 in Museums in Gotland
A mix of art, history, culture and archaeological Gotland and Visby pieces make up Gotland Museum, founded in 1875. The art collection consists of painting and crafts from the 1800s to modern times, often local or national. You'll explore three floors of Viking and medieval artifacts, gold and silver treasures found on the island, paintings by the well-known Richard Bergh, and an exhibit on the Battle of Gotland. Learn about 11th-century rune stones, 9,000-year-old skeletons, a local love story, and a summary of executions. Take a look at our Visby itinerary maker website to schedule your visit to Gotland Museum and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Had heard good about this because the low score. The info I got earlier was that you would get your own headphones and then a similar guide. But this was not the case. Maybe a wrong information before. Much to read.

  • We are avid museum goers and had never seen picture stones before. Some were stunning. The museum is beautifully organized and things are well displayed. It's a small museum but well worth a visit.  more »

  • First, the shop of museum is very good. You can find a lot of books about culture and nature in Gotland with good price. Small special souvenirs like cups, porcelain and posters.
  • Cool place with much historical stuff, but it's boring that fenomenalen isn't located in the same building any more. A most see none the less
  • It nice to see the history of gotland. It is Swedish and some English text that you can read
  • A great museum with everything you need to know about the history of Gotland!
  • Great exhibit! A must visit!

Where to stay in Visby

What Visby lacks in accommodations, it makes up for in charm with its medieval houses, cobblestone streets, and churches--not to mention the preserved medieval wall and abundance of roses. The moderate to upscale hotels in the city center tend to fill up quickly, so be sure to book in advance. There are also a handful of guesthouses and pensions, along with a very limited selection of hostels. If you're open to a bit of a drive, look to the south to the town of Burgsvik, a resort town with more accommodations.
