Visby

4.2
Gardens · Castles · Specialty Museums
Located on the largest island in the Baltic Sea, the historical port town of Visby features one of the best-preserved medieval city walls in northern Europe. Recognized as a World Heritage Site in the 1990s, the small town once served as a major center of the Hanseatic League, a medieval trading federation. The city's thick walls still enclose hundreds of warehouses and merchant dwellings from the 13th century, a living reminder of Visby's golden days as a commercial powerhouse. Packed with foreign travelers during the warmer months, Visby hosts an annual medieval festival known for its costumed street performances and open-air markets. During this peak tourist season, strict laws ban motorized traffic within the old town to make the experience more safe and pleasant. With the Inspirock international travel planner, Visby and other destinations across the globe can be made central to your personalized travel plans.

Where to stay in Visby

What Visby lacks in accommodations, it makes up for in charm with its medieval houses, cobblestone streets, and churches--not to mention the preserved medieval wall and abundance of roses. The moderate to upscale hotels in the city center tend to fill up quickly, so be sure to book in advance. There are also a handful of guesthouses and pensions, along with a very limited selection of hostels. If you're open to a bit of a drive, look to the south to the town of Burgsvik, a resort town with more accommodations.
