#2 of 10 in Historic Sites in Vasteras
Anundshög is a tumulus near Västerås in Västmanland, the largest in Sweden. It has a diameter of 60m and is about 9m high.Assessments of the era of the mound vary between the Bronze Age and the late Iron Age. A fireplace under it has been dated by radiocarbon dating to sometime between AD 210 and 540.Some historians have associated the mound with the legendary King Anund, while others regard this as speculative. It is purported also that the name is taken from the large runestone at the site, the central stone in a row of 15 alongside the mound, re-erected in the 1960s and apparently marking out the route of the Eriksgata. The inscription on the runestone reads:+ fulkuiþr + raisti + stainn + þasi + ala + at + sun + + sin + hiþin + bruþur + anutaR + uraiþr hik + runaR"Folkvid raised all of these stones after his son Heden, Anund's brother. Vred carved the runes."At the foot of the mound are 2 large stone ships placed end to end, 51m and 54m long. The site was a thing-place and the ship settings may be associated with this function.

  • This place surprised me a lot. The "boats" was quite big. The place was a nice stop for about an hour or so.  more »
  • The city of västerås seems right in years (2017) have focused on visitor goal with good signage and a brand new visitor centre with a café (which, however, was closed when we visited). Four large ships circles (stones that mark an imaginary boat) and a huge mound it can go up.

  • In transit from Sigtuna towards Vadstena, with a little detour you can make a leap forward in time to the bronze age. Quiet place in the countryside, free parking and free visit. Small coffee shop with info. Half an hour of brain in standbay
