The Swedish History Museum, Stockholm
(4.2/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Known for its gold room full of treasure and artifacts from the Viking age, The Swedish History Museum houses more than 10 million objects and works dating back to Mesolithic times. It aims to educate visitors about Sweden's archeological and cultural history. Though Bengt Romare and George Scherman designed the modern building in the 20th century, most of the artifacts on display are much older. Be sure to spend time viewing the gold and silver collection, Viking objects from World Heritage Site Birka, and famous Swedish artwork. • The museum was having some work done when we looked around. But it was still possible to see some really interesting artefacts from Swedish history, particularly the Vikings.
  • I actually went to the museum twice. On the first visit I saw the prehistoric section, the Vikings part and the Gold Room. As I was running out of time, I returned two days later to see the remaining ...  more »
  • I thought the layout of the museum and general chronological layout was well designed. Felt too much of the space was given over to the pre-historic man. Definitely wanted more of the viking history a...  more »

  • Just ok ... There is no admission fee, but the museum doesn't feel tourist friendly. All descriptions next to the items are swedish only, they have translations on seperate laminated papers which you have to pick up and carry around with you. In general it wasn't presented very interesting so it took me about 30mins to go through and leave.
  • Fantastic that it is free! Nice exhibits of diversity of life, including a few extinct species. Blue whale and dinosaur bones! Fantastic mineral collection including a few large meteorites.
  • Great place for cbildren and teenagers. Full of interactive areas and dynamic spaces to learn about the history of Sweden and the nordic countries. It can be visited in less that 3 hours by adults and has mpre information about the ancient eras than anything else. There is a big restaurant inside the museum. Really nice service, attention and security.
  • The treasury and the Viking section were nice, but it's rather small. It's free though so it's definitely worth to come and take a look.
  • Pleasant and interesting museum which also is free for the public. If you're lucky, you might find some activities for the kids to enjoy.
