The Swedish History Museum, Stockholm

4.3
Known for its gold room full of treasure and artifacts from the Viking age, The Swedish History Museum houses more than 10 million objects and works dating back to Mesolithic times. It aims to educate visitors about Sweden's archeological and cultural history. Though Bengt Romare and George Scherman designed the modern building in the 20th century, most of the artifacts on display are much older. Be sure to spend time viewing the gold and silver collection, Viking objects from World Heritage Site Birka, and famous Swedish artwork. • Opening time on a sunday was slightly later here, so no hurry to beat the queues. Went down to the gold room first, well laid out exhibit with English descriptions. Viking exhibit is interesting too. ...  more »

  • This place is the best if you are interested in the history of the vikings. Here you can see objects from 1000 years ago and have a feel about how their daily lifestyle was. Also, and the best part, the vikings are shown in opposition to what Hollywood made them look like and thus creating am accurate image of that time in history. There is a scale model of a viking town and the light spectacle is creating the impression of the day-night alternamce almost giving you the feeling like you are there, and the sound adds emotion. Moving on, you will travel to the medieval period in the same manner. All in all, a great museum! And it was free when I visited
  • See the thing is it was a really well put together museum for the most part. The problem was it was pretty political. It was trying to impose liberal values on the guests who are visiting. I strongly condemn trying to impose liberal values on history especially those that aren’t true. You can’t force something like that. History is history... it’s not the way you want it to be. Please fix this, it’s honestly a disgrace to the past!!
  • interesting museum and a good place for lunch, especially on the weekend, when there are few other places with a special lunch menu. Access with elevator to the right of the main entrance, go to the restaurant using the shop, there is a ramp instead of the few stairs. All floors are reachable by elevators and/or ramps.
  • Very nice that it's free. However, doesn't quite give you the satisfaction that you have understood the general history of Sweden. How Sweden transitioned from vikings to royals, christianity, etc. Perhaps I missed it, but exhibit on modern history seems shallow.
  • Beautiful museum and architecture. Very interesting and not boring. If you like history you must take a look there when in Stockholm
