The Swedish History Museum, Stockholm

4.2
Known for its gold room full of treasure and artifacts from the Viking age, The Swedish History Museum houses more than 10 million objects and works dating back to Mesolithic times. It aims to educate visitors about Sweden's archeological and cultural history. Though Bengt Romare and George Scherman designed the modern building in the 20th century, most of the artifacts on display are much older. Be sure to spend time viewing the gold and silver collection, Viking objects from World Heritage Site Birka, and famous Swedish artwork. The Museum is within reach of children: there are spaces (the garden with the ship and Viking Village) and activities to do during the visit which winds along the Swedish history.

Currently under renovation say 2018 completion is not of National Museum of history in National Gallery of art. Visited today from the district goes away a little, the entrance and on the other side, a bit confusing. Easy-to-understand the history of Sweden are grouped by age. Taste of the restaurant is very cool, look at the beautiful central courtyard. In learning can be enjoyed free of charge.

A nice museum to browse through various ages of Swedish history. Also conveniently close (10 minutes' walk) to Nordiska museet, Skansen, Junibacken, ABBA museum, Vasa museum, Gröna Lund and a good num...  more »

  • My 6-year-old loved this museum. Free admission, open till 8pm on Wednesdays and plenty of hands-on things for children (like all Stockholm museums). We spent most of our trip in the Viking section which gives great information about their way of life. My son also really enjoyed listening to tales of the gods in a lovely quiet area with headphones and cushions.
  • You could spend the day here easily. We loved it. If you like history and architecture this is a fantastic adventure. Lots to see and do. Even kids will enjoy it. Take the time to read the exhibits and make it a learning experience. This place is unique!
  • Lots of stuff to look at, beautiful and interesting artifacts, and a couple really excellent displays that were about the nature of museums and how they present objects and historical narrative. There was also several hands-on stations for kids outside in the courtyard - historical crafts and activities - looked really fun!
  • You would still not believe is a free entrance after visiting... The exhibitions are beyond expectations, with explanatory texts in Swedish and English. Lots of artefacts and a successful interpretation of people's lives along the history. Definitely is a must see place in Stockholm.
  • hi chiara and I like swedish history museum because they have more then 1000 things to look at it and it's a nice place to go in school!
