German Church, Stockholm

(4.1/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
While strolling through the city's Old Town, stop by German Church and admire the impressive architecture and collection of religious ornaments. The church is dedicated to Saint Gertrude, the protector of the guild of German merchants. The guild's headquarters was transformed into a church in the 18th century. From its 86 m (282 ft) steeple adorned with gargoyles, to the Baroque interior and large stained-glass windows, the structure is an architectural masterpiece. The church has a long history as one of Sweden's foremost centers of religious music. Today many organ concerts are organized here, and the site is famous for choir singing and melodic bells. Admission to the church is free. Make German Church part of your personalized Stockholm itinerary using our Stockholm vacation trip planner.

  • In the middle of Gamla Stan, you will find the German Church St. Gertrud which is part of the Swedish Church and serving especially the German Church in Stockholm. We visited the beautiful church on a Saturday when there were open from 11.00 and a great many customers enough especially Germans. There was the game beautiful organ music. The Church was originally built 1638-1642 and after a fire in 1878 rebuilt 1878-1887 to the appearance it has today. The Church has a pretty nice Tower and seems nearly square instead of the known elongated, but very beautiful and a rich interior. Very eye drops was the pulpit in dark Ebony tree, the Golden organ and the handsome marble floor in black/white/Brown pattern. Really nice was images or mosaics in the Windows, very colorful and showing also everyday situations from Germany as, a peasant in the fields. Much home stavns inspired. A really beautiful church which at any time is worthy of a visit. At one of the entrances to the church square are just as in through a small gate and here hangs a text "Furchtet Gott und Ehret den Konig" or fear God and honor the King! We can recommend a visit

  • This is one of the smaller churches to be seen in the old town part of Stockholm in the Gamla Stan district. When I visited it was already early evening and so the church itself was closed. Still look...  more »
