Gammelstad Church Town, Lulea

(4.3/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Visit one of the best-preserved monuments of old Swedish tradition at Gammelstad Church Town. Collections of cottages similar to this one were once a common sight in Sweden. Before the age of cars, people who attended religious festivities from the countryside often couldn't make it back home on the same day, so they built a cottage next to the church. Many of the cottages are still privately owned, but some are open for visitors and restored to give you a glimpse into Swedish history. You can also visit a 15th-century cathedral, and try your hand at traditional crafts. Guided tours are regularly available in Swedish and English, but if you require a specific time or another language, you can book a tour in advance. • Historic area in scenic area. Photographic experience. Functional church in use for weddings and routine services. Accessible by hourly bus service from Lulea. Wear gripping shoes in winter.  more »
  • Live near it is a part of everyday life, yet still admirable, and worth seeing. Worth a visit, of course.

  • The town itself is not very interesting but the Church is very beautiful inside. Also the fact that there are 408 wooden houses are where the people could stay if they attended an important event in the Church are apart to see. If you're in the area, be sure to go check it out.
