Kalmar Castle, Kalmar

4.6
#1 of 10 in Historic Sites in Kalmar County
See firsthand how kings lived at Kalmar Castle, a 16th-century palace built in Renaissance-style architecture. The castle began as a round defensive tower in the 12th century, a powerful defensive compound strategically built just north of the Danish border. In 1397 it served as the crucial location for signing the Kalmar Union. Explore the dramatic history of the castle through the rooms in the governor's apartments--each represents a different event. Travel over the moat, across the tower bridge, and through the courtyard to see the dungeons, chapel, cannons, and hidden rooms of the castle. Be sure to join a guided tour led by knowledgeable guides dressed in period attire; you'll learn about the ghosts of the castle, among other things. • I was here today at a conference hosted by the Swedish solar energy. What a place, super fun that they chose to put the Conference here. Förmiddagsfikat consisted of cheese ham sandwich, coffee &. Lunch was served a true classic, Burger with mashed potatoes, peas, melted butter and lingonberries. It was good, nothing stood out but it was good. The Conference ended with a dark chocolate brownie, sweet and delicious.

  • A great castle with both inner and outer Bailey. The Royal Chapel is an experience and a toilet in the King's room, an experience. There is much to say about the Castle but please take a tour in the nearest surroundings. Since Kalmar is one of few cities that actually has two ring walls a little less in the närheen of the Castle and the large round Kvarnholmen (City Center)

  • Kalmar Castle is really beautiful, with a beautiful view. You can spend here a few hours, to visit the inner rooms you have to pay a fee, but you can just walk around for free. Nice place to visit!
  • Marvelous 16th C feeling. A must IF you are interested in Nordic/Scandinavian history. Great guidance, very fun and entertaing. Something for the whole family. Was an important frontier fortress by it's closeness to the Swedish/Danish border. The three southernmost provinces were Danish until 1645!
  • An interesting castle which is well preserved. With an exhibition which tells the historical importance of both the castle and the city of Kalmar in the seige of Kalmar and battle against the Danes
  • Well preserved castle with lots of activities for children and interesting tours included in the admission price. Walking on the walls provided some nice views. It was a well worth a visit but we spent more time than we wanted to waiting for tours to start.
  • The place takes you back to Medieval time of Europe..plenty place to see..had a good time here..
