Kalmar Castle, Kalmar

4.5
#1 of 7 in Things to do in Kalmar
See firsthand how kings lived at Kalmar Castle, a 16th-century palace built in Renaissance-style architecture. The castle began as a round defensive tower in the 12th century, a powerful defensive compound strategically built just north of the Danish border. In 1397 it served as the crucial location for signing the Kalmar Union. Explore the dramatic history of the castle through the rooms in the governor's apartments--each represents a different event. Travel over the moat, across the tower bridge, and through the courtyard to see the dungeons, chapel, cannons, and hidden rooms of the castle. Be sure to join a guided tour led by knowledgeable guides dressed in period attire; you'll learn about the ghosts of the castle, among other things. • It's well worth a visit to Kalmar Castle. The rooms are amazing and you can practically feel the history. If you're near Kalmar, you can't pass up a chance to visit the castle.  more »
  • A fine area to roam in. Large lawns, which fits nicely for a picnic. Unfortunately, we were not able to go into the Castle but perhaps next time

  • Small reminder - now strong was Sweden in the past.
  • Impressive! The doors were open so we were able to go through and on also on top over the "outside walls". In addition we had the chance to see the beautiful Sunset over sea! 🌅
  • Exploring the outside of this beautiful castle is free and worth the visit if you're in the area. Allot somewhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours for the visit depending on interest and the weather. The walls are accessable and the view from them stunning. There's a small shop as well with some typical swedish tourist items, some replicas of local artefacts, Astrid Lindgren themed toys and books, and post cards.
  • Ancient castle with fantastic view ;) In the old city near to kalmar centrum
  • Amazingly fun visit to the castle! Great time walking around the walls around the cannons and taking pictures. Didn't get a chance to go inside but I really liked the experience. Hopefully people will stop carving their names in the walls.
