Kalmar Castle, Kalmar

4.6
#1 of 10 in Historic Sites in Kalmar County
See firsthand how kings lived at Kalmar Castle, a 16th-century palace built in Renaissance-style architecture. The castle began as a round defensive tower in the 12th century, a powerful defensive compound strategically built just north of the Danish border. In 1397 it served as the crucial location for signing the Kalmar Union. Explore the dramatic history of the castle through the rooms in the governor's apartments--each represents a different event. Travel over the moat, across the tower bridge, and through the courtyard to see the dungeons, chapel, cannons, and hidden rooms of the castle. Be sure to join a guided tour led by knowledgeable guides dressed in period attire; you'll learn about the ghosts of the castle, among other things. • Closed in winter weekdays, open only on the weekend. Though one can still go into the courtyard. Because nothing was open I can't assess it any further.

  • A tour on their own. The information went anyway to get through signs and div. The store was open with div of everything possible. Was also the first customer 2018! Went not to bargain

  • Castle medium size with a beautiful view of the sea. I recommend visiting during the Christmas market. There are approximately 120 exhibitors offering assortment of farm grub after jewelry. A castle to explore very quickly, I believe, that this is a mandatory point while exploring Kalmar.

  • Well preserved castle with lots of activities for children and interesting tours included in the admission price. Walking on the walls provided some nice views. It was a well worth a visit but we spent more time than we wanted to waiting for tours to start.
  • Surprisingly nice. I especially liked the fact that all the staff and guides were wearing really well made costumes, as well as there being some role playing going on all the time in the court yard. Must be popular with the kids! Didn't catch a tour but I overheard one in English and the guide seemed really enthusiastic!
  • Everything you want from a classic medevial castle! Great for both kids and adults.
  • This is a fantastic slice of Swedish history not to be missed if you're nearby. Castle dungeons, secret passages, original murals and a wealth of other impressions from a distant past.
  • Very nice castle, well preserved and presented. The castle shop is well worth a visit.
