Kalmar Castle, Kalmar

(4.5/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
See firsthand how kings lived at Kalmar Castle, a 16th-century palace built in Renaissance-style architecture. The castle began as a round defensive tower in the 12th century, a powerful defensive compound strategically built just north of the Danish border. In 1397 it served as the crucial location for signing the Kalmar Union. Explore the dramatic history of the castle through the rooms in the governor's apartments--each represents a different event. Travel over the moat, across the tower bridge, and through the courtyard to see the dungeons, chapel, cannons, and hidden rooms of the castle. Be sure to join a guided tour led by knowledgeable guides dressed in period attire; you'll learn about the ghosts of the castle, among other things. • One of Sweden's best preserved Renaissance castles. Grand but not luxury. Is beautiful as a landmark in Kalmar.

  • Went here on a tour of the castle. The guide was really funny and knowledgeable. It also offers a gorgeous view of the ocean and it's a perfect picnic location during the summer.
  • Amazingly fun visit to the castle! Great time walking around the walls around the cannons and taking pictures. Didn't get a chance to go inside but I really liked the experience. Hopefully people will stop carving their names in the walls.
  • Lovely old 16th Century castle with a nice exhibition inside and gardens outside.
  • A must see when visiting Kalmar. In the summer they have a kids scavenger hunt and when completed the children get knighted by the "Queen"!
  • Beautiful castle but the price for tickets are kind of high .
