Göteborgs Stadsmuseum, Gothenburg

(3.9/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Established in 1861, Göteborgs Stadsmuseum takes visitors through West Sweden's history from the Viking Age to the present day. The cultural museum sits inside the 18th-century East India House, and an exhibit details the evolution of the company. Artifacts include Viking coins, jewelry, tools, a ship, and an original key to the city gates. Be aware that although displays are very informative and interesting, there is little English signage. The site does offer guided tours, a playroom for children, and a cafe. • It is small and a number of the exhibits were closed for renovation. It is nice enough and most exhibits are translated into English. One gets a sense of the evolution of the city through time, althou...  more »
  • We likes this museum very much. In short time we'd the possibility to be informed about the top events from the Swedish history.
  • It is a remarkable building, but to become more familiar with the City Museum. Under 25 years old was free. Locker is free toilet in 5 kr. What historical exhibits are named after local Gothenburg is Maine. I see old furniture and clothes, and old people was small than Sweden's modern thought. Land facing the sea was only many exhibits on shipbuilding and the Vikings are and were. Near Oscar • portrait of Frederic Church, that person also. I think English or mentioned in the description of the exhibits, comparatively to enjoy. Corner of contemporary art can directly touch, enjoy. I thought big bold new Museum will refrain from touching these exhibits, said a Japanese sense, but still here. I think that the Museum is not just for adults, there were many families with children, suitable for all ages. The exhibits so many lengths and so close to heart of city is not touching the local history and it is good I think.

  • September 2016: probably the worst museum I've ever been to. It might get better when they open the new exhibit in 2017, but more than half of the building was closed when we went there, and the exhibits they had were "really stretchin' it" ... enough content for one roomful diluted across 4 floors. I'm posting this not to complain, but to warn other travelers. Don't expect much, especially from the viking exhibit.
  • Free musée un with a variety of exhibits. Some in English and some in Swedish only. Fun 1-2 hour stop when visiting Gothenburg,
  • Interesting museum, but mostly closed for renovation until spring 2017 I went as the museum is free for -25yo, and I'm planning to go back then Exhibitions on Goteborg folks life from the 1700 (Viking era was closed) are good, also a very good part on more modern history of Goteborg
  • Small museum with interesting exhibits in a beautiful building. A wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon in Göteborg.
  • If you know nothing about Vikings, this place is for you. Also ticket gets you into a few other local museums.
