Church Tourist Spot
Visit the largest wooden structure in the Western Hemisphere at Saint Peter and Paul Basilica, recently upgraded to the status of a basilica. Built in 1885 and restored in 2010, the imposing wooden building features a peaceful interior, made completely of Surinamese cedar wood. Inside, you can view the grave of missionary priest Peter Donders, three different-sized bells in the tower, and intricate decorations and designs in the woodwork. • I thought nicer on the outside than inside. It is said to be the largest wooden structure in the western hemisphere. Worth a visit when in Paramaribo.  more »
  • It's an impressive cathedral so totally built of wood. However, what we found inside.

  • The Basilica gives you a sense of how small a part you are in God's great creation and yet gives you a sense of belonging as well.

Where to stay in Paramaribo

Paramaribo is packed with guesthouses, which make this town an extremely appealing destination for backpackers. The least expensive option in town, some of these establishments offer very basic rooms and shared restrooms without hot water--ask about on-site facilities before checking in. Dozens of mid-range hotels provide a more suitable option for families with kids, business travelers, and anyone else looking for a few more perks. If you're planning to stay longer, consider renting a furnished apartment in a residential neighborhood.
