Presidential Palace, Paramaribo

3.6
Admire one of the best-preserved examples of Dutch colonial architecture at Presidential Palace, part of Paramaribo's World Heritage-listed historical center. This three-story white building, located across from the main square, was built in 1730 and remains the residence of the president of Suriname. Though you probably cannot gain entrance, you can walk around the exterior, taking in the symmetrical stone construction and wooden upper floor. Then visit the palm garden behind the building, home to capuchin monkeys as well as tropical birds. Proximity to the national assembly, court of justice, and ministry of finance makes this a convenient stop on a walking tour. • Eye-catcher for both Surinamese people and tourists. Ever on the beautiful Orange square, independence square later. Now people's square (???) The Presidential Palace is also known as the people's Palace. However, I know no one from the people (the average Suriname) that the Palace has seen from the inside. Since the al the past 17 years is not inhabited, I wonder why it is not open for the public (???) If one has a little contribution to entrance asks, one would eventually be able to maintain the Palace with the proceeds! International very common!

  • Could only see it by driving by from the outside but it is impressive. A policeman in a car chased my taxi driver when he stopped so I could take a photo and said we needed to park and walk over to ta...  more »
  • Very nice building but unfortunately the square in front is to maintain. Just for a few photos.

  • Really lovely building. It's close to a lot of other sites in Paramaribo so be sure to stop by if only for a picture.
  • A place you must visit in Paramaribo, the mix between modern government and old colonial heritage.
  • This wooden building is one of the remnants of the Ducth colonial era. If one visits #Suriname a visit is recommended.
  • It's a good place to visit and learn more of the heritage of suriname
  • Nice visit at night

Where to stay in Paramaribo

Paramaribo is packed with guesthouses, which make this town an extremely appealing destination for backpackers. The least expensive option in town, some of these establishments offer very basic rooms and shared restrooms without hot water--ask about on-site facilities before checking in. Dozens of mid-range hotels provide a more suitable option for families with kids, business travelers, and anyone else looking for a few more perks. If you're planning to stay longer, consider renting a furnished apartment in a residential neighborhood.
