Paramaribo Zoo, Paramaribo

2.8
#1 of 6 in Outdoors in Suriname
The only zoo in Suriname, Paramaribo Zoo has survived for 40 years to finally see an increase in visitors over the past decade or so. You'll have a chance to observe a variety of animals in captivity, including several monkeys, caimans, jaguars, red ibis, king vultures, boa constrictors, and anacondas. Pack your own supplies of snacks and drinks, as no kiosks or shops operate on site. Consider renting a bicycle for your trip to the zoo, which isn't far from downtown Paramaribo. Take the guesswork out of planning a Paramaribo vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

  • The Zoo is located quite far from the city centre, right outside the fence of the jungle, that's probably why influx of visitors there. Looks pretty well-groomed, though enclosures, especially for small predators. Perhaps only the monkeys feel more or less freely, for them the Habitat identified Islands. Collected interesting animals-leopards, Jaguars, tapirs, Capybaras. Here, by the way, for the first time in my life I saw the Aardvark. Again, tropical birds-toucans, macaws, peacocks roam freely. There is a small playground for children.

  • There are talks about animals being taken away and eaten? I don't believe that at all. Parbo is a nice pleasant city and the zoo seem to be well maintained. There are more animals here than Guyana Zoo...  more »

  • In dire need of maintenance. Most signs are not readable because of their age. Most animals live in cramped cages.
  • Not fun at alll
  • Great zoo but for my next visit i would like to see more animals. some of the habitats were empty.
  • Cool place to hang out. Lots of different animals here.

Where to stay in Paramaribo

Paramaribo is packed with guesthouses, which make this town an extremely appealing destination for backpackers. The least expensive option in town, some of these establishments offer very basic rooms and shared restrooms without hot water--ask about on-site facilities before checking in. Dozens of mid-range hotels provide a more suitable option for families with kids, business travelers, and anyone else looking for a few more perks. If you're planning to stay longer, consider renting a furnished apartment in a residential neighborhood.
