Neveh Shalom Jewish Synagogue, Paramaribo

(4.4/5 based on 55 reviews on the web)
Observe the deep Jewish roots of the Surinamese capital by visiting Neveh Shalom Jewish Synagogue, a place of worship established and built by the Ashkenazi community of Jews in Paramaribo in 1719. Head inside and survey the unusual sandy floor--purportedly a reminder of the Hebrews' 40 years spent in the desert after exodus from Egypt. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore one of the oldest synagogues in the Western hemisphere. • The sand floor inside the building is unique and is a commemoration of the forty year journey of the Jews through the desert after their departure from Egypt. The story goes that it is also a reminder of the days that the Jews had to pray in secret because of the Spanish Inquisition. To mute the sound of prayer they had sand floors in their prisons. The building dates from 1830, and the oldest monuments of the period below.
