Jodensavanne, Paramaribo

3.6
#3 of 6 in Historic Sites in Suriname
Sightseers and history buffs will find plenty to admire in Jodensavanne, a historical migrant community established by persecuted Jews fleeing Spain in the early 15th century. With the entire community uprooting to the nation's capital of Paramaribo, the town's synagogue is still maintained annually by a small dedicated group of Jewish-Surinamese people. Take a guided tour for a personal touch as well as an excellent glimpse into the very beginnings of Suriname's Jewish community; many guides are the knowledgeable descendants of the original immigrants. • Jodensavanne should not be missed if you want to get to know Suriname. Jewish people from Europe came in 1640 fled here and were welcomed. They were the ones who played a very important role in the flowering of Suriname. Many of today's organizations come from the entrepreneurial spirit of the Jewish Surinamese people and also within the medicine and the case-law, they have left their traces to this day. Then you can not miss a visit to jodensavanne. The Foundation is committed to preserve this heritage, donations are very welcome because there are still many rehabilitation and maintenance.

Where to stay in Paramaribo

Paramaribo is packed with guesthouses, which make this town an extremely appealing destination for backpackers. The least expensive option in town, some of these establishments offer very basic rooms and shared restrooms without hot water--ask about on-site facilities before checking in. Dozens of mid-range hotels provide a more suitable option for families with kids, business travelers, and anyone else looking for a few more perks. If you're planning to stay longer, consider renting a furnished apartment in a residential neighborhood.
