Jodensavanne, Paramaribo

3.5
#3 of 6 in Historic Sites in Suriname
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Sightseers and history buffs will find plenty to admire in Jodensavanne, a historical migrant community established by persecuted Jews fleeing Spain in the early 15th century. With the entire community uprooting to the nation's capital of Paramaribo, the town's synagogue is still maintained annually by a small dedicated group of Jewish-Surinamese people. Take a guided tour for a personal touch as well as an excellent glimpse into the very beginnings of Suriname's Jewish community; many guides are the knowledgeable descendants of the original immigrants. • Jodensavanne visited on your own (with car hire). To do very well, via Highway/Paranam/Powakka, turn left onto Redi Delecia Afobakka dirt-to about a nice asphalt road to the Carolina bridge, over the bridge clearly indicated where jodensavanne is. Very interesting what happened there and what hardships they have had to endure. There is also a beneficial source. Perfect location to do a tour on your own.

  • Jodensavanne is a hidden historic Pearl and certainly worth a visit. Do this with a boat from the waterfront which is a dimension to this relatively affordable excursion.

Where to stay in Paramaribo

Paramaribo is packed with guesthouses, which make this town an extremely appealing destination for backpackers. The least expensive option in town, some of these establishments offer very basic rooms and shared restrooms without hot water--ask about on-site facilities before checking in. Dozens of mid-range hotels provide a more suitable option for families with kids, business travelers, and anyone else looking for a few more perks. If you're planning to stay longer, consider renting a furnished apartment in a residential neighborhood.
