Jodensavanne, Paramaribo

3.5
#4 of 6 in Historic Sites in Suriname
Sightseers and history buffs will find plenty to admire in Jodensavanne, a historical migrant community established by persecuted Jews fleeing Spain in the early 15th century. With the entire community uprooting to the nation's capital of Paramaribo, the town's synagogue is still maintained annually by a small dedicated group of Jewish-Surinamese people. Take a guided tour for a personal touch as well as an excellent glimpse into the very beginnings of Suriname's Jewish community; many guides are the knowledgeable descendants of the original immigrants. • The most striking are the historical graves & the ruin of the synagogue. V descendants Sephardic Jews will surely experience a kind of solidarity.. ... Further, there is not a whole lot to do.

  • Stayed on adjacent resort belonging to Joah Inn. Jodensavanne is especially interesting because of its history. Small museum is very informative. Impressive are the Jewish cemetery and the various cemeteries of free men (free slaves) with their wooden floor slabs. Especially the stay on the newly launched resort what belongs at Joah Inn in Paramaribo was delicious. Here you can stay with a group. Swim in the Suriname River. Sunbathe on the beach, hiking to jodensavanne and to the neighbouring Indian village. Or simply hangmateren in the shade. While walking in adjacent jungle you can find sloths, different birds (including a Toucan seen), lizards, iguanas and zovoorts.

  • After reading the book How expensive was the sugar I really enjoyed visiting Joden Savanne. Our guide was excellent but we missed the tour by Cynthia McLeod by a day which was a pity  more »

Where to stay in Paramaribo

Paramaribo is packed with guesthouses, which make this town an extremely appealing destination for backpackers. The least expensive option in town, some of these establishments offer very basic rooms and shared restrooms without hot water--ask about on-site facilities before checking in. Dozens of mid-range hotels provide a more suitable option for families with kids, business travelers, and anyone else looking for a few more perks. If you're planning to stay longer, consider renting a furnished apartment in a residential neighborhood.
