Commewijne River, Paramaribo

Water Body Nature / Park
Head along the banks of Commewijne River and past the plantations for a raft of colonial museums, lush parks, and restaurants. While water taxis are probably the easiest way to tour the river and its banks, energetic visitors can consider exploring on bikes--available for rent in town. Vistors have reported common dolphin sightings in the river's waters, so take a camera along and try to capture one on film. Where to stay in Paramaribo

Paramaribo is packed with guesthouses, which make this town an extremely appealing destination for backpackers. The least expensive option in town, some of these establishments offer very basic rooms and shared restrooms without hot water--ask about on-site facilities before checking in. Dozens of mid-range hotels provide a more suitable option for families with kids, business travelers, and anyone else looking for a few more perks. If you're planning to stay longer, consider renting a furnished apartment in a residential neighborhood.
