Fort Charlotte, Kingstown

4.2
#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in St. Vincent
Gain an insight into Kingstown's history with a visit to Fort Charlotte. Unusually, this standard Napoleonic-era fort features gun turrets pointing inward to the island itself--indeed, the British army wasn't concerned with a European naval invasion, but rather the Black Caribs. The oppressed descendents of the island's indigenous cultures and shipwrecked slave escapees had caused havoc on the island when allied with French invading forces late in the 18th century. Ironically, the fort itself was built using slave labor in 1806. Take a guided tour to illuminate your visit with stories of this troubled period. Bring a camera to capture the views of Kingstown's port and waterfront from the hilltop citadel. • Old fort returned to the french by the English. A leprosarium there had been before. Take a mini bus driven by locals in Kingstown, which will get you there. Nice view and a refreshment bar is there.

  • Take a taxi or minibus to see this well preserved fortress. Helpful and informed staff. Liked it; well worth a visit. Steep walk if you have the time.
  • If your going to visit the Forte from a cruise ship, why not walk! If your lucky you might bump into Thomas, who is 92yrs old. A wonderful local chap who lives in a beautiful yellow house close to the top. The Forte guides are the way to go and bring the Forte alive with stories about the soldiers who barracked there, as well as the prisoners!
  • Magnificent view. Priceless historical events
  • Great place to visit,,, conditions of place need to improve mainly road and parking space
  • This place has stunning sights and contains rich historical artifacts. This is a must see site for anyone visiting the island. One notable thing about the site apart from the breathtaking views is the very strong winds.
