Fort Charlotte, Kingstown

(4.3/5 based on 160 reviews on the web)
Gain an insight into Kingstown's history with a visit to Fort Charlotte. Unusually, this standard Napoleonic-era fort features gun turrets pointing inward to the island itself--indeed, the British army wasn't concerned with a European naval invasion, but rather the Black Caribs. The oppressed descendents of the island's indigenous cultures and shipwrecked slave escapees had caused havoc on the island when allied with French invading forces late in the 18th century. Ironically, the fort itself was built using slave labor in 1806. Take a guided tour to illuminate your visit with stories of this troubled period. Bring a camera to capture the views of Kingstown's port and waterfront from the hilltop citadel. • On our AIDA, we made a stop on St. Vincent's cruise. In the island capital of Kingstown and the surrounding area, there was plenty to see. Among other things, we visited the Fort Charlotte. Fort Charlotte is an ancient fortress. From here, we had beautiful views of the sea and the Bay of Kingstown. There was also our ship, the AIDAdiva. The Fort sits very high up on a mountain. Here you should organize a ride. We had booked a tour of the island with a private taxi. At our request, we were then again ramped up to the Fort. Above in the Fort, a few old gun barrels were issued. Otherwise, we ran only on the fortress and enjoyed the wide and super views of the offshore islands. The visit was worthwhile in any case.

  • A great view overlooking Kingstown, bay, the port, and also sunset over the Caribbean Sea. I can also see Bequia Island clearly here. One small history room is also here briefing the history of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines I jogged from Bay Street up to here for around 20 minutes. The distance is also good for walking. If you walk or jog, get prepared dogs might bark heavily on you along the road.
  • Always love visiting here when I come home. Great to take beautiful panoramic sunset shots.
  • Lovely view of Kingstown,Campden park, and ottley Hall ship yard
  • One of the most humbling and amazingly gorgeous places I have ever been too. The people and the culture are some of the most humbling I've ever experienced. Definitely a must see.
  • If you appreciate history or anything beautiful for that matter, you should definitely make it your business to make it up this Fort. Panoramic view of Kingstown, and as far leeward as Questelles.
