Pitons, St. Lucia

The World Heritage-listed Pitons represent two volcanic spires rising from the Caribbean Sea. Take a boat ride to gaze at the tall volcanic plugs, or try snorkeling in the surrounding waters, filled with coral reefs and an array of marine life. Brave the strenuous hike to the top of the lush Gros Piton, the larger of the two spires, and enjoy the panoramic views. Climbing the very steep Petit Piton, the smaller spire, is recommended for pro climbers only. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Soufriere holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Pitons and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • General: A rigorous, but extremely rewarding hike for anyone who wants to experience a day aside of just relaxing at a resort on St. Lucia. Breath-taking views at the half-way point (of Petit Piton) and of the island at the top. Guides are extremely friendly and experienced, usually hiking the trail 1 or 2 times a day. Rocks can be slippery! Especially after it rains or in days with high humidity. Equipment: I recommend wearing a lightweight hiking backpack, with shoulder and waist straps. In this backpack, you should carry 2 or 3 one liter water bottles, small camera (or phone), and sunscreen. Wear shorts, an athletic short sleeve shirt, and a hat. I also highly recommend trekking poles on this hike. Make room for them in your backpack for the first half of the hike, but during the second portion (ascending and descending) they will be extremely useful. Preparation: Core exercises, calf and hamstring exercises. A Stairmaster would also be helpful if this is your first major hike.
  • The climb is not for the faint of heart..!!
  • Took us longer than we planned but it was worth it at the top.
  • Simply an amazing experience. Even with only the briefest of views before the clouds came down as I was unfortunate enough to experience, the strenuous climb is worth it to claim you've conquered the famous peak.
  • It's a real accomplishment to get to the top. I had jelly-legs for most of the way down. I wouldn't do it again, but am glad I did it. Be perfectly clear: this is a difficult hike.
