Mount Liamuiga, St. Kitts

4.0
#2 of 10 in Nature in St. Kitts and Nevis
Challenging hikes with unparalleled scenic beauty, Mount Liamuiga is not for the faint hearted. A stratovolcano with an elevation of 1,156 m (3,792 ft), the highest point in St Kitts, it was formally named "Mount Misery", an indication of the hiking difficulty levels here. A diverse landscape, many trails begin at the old mango forest woodlands, then on into buzzing dense rainforests. If you make it to the top, you'll experience a mesmerising trail through Cloud Forest, then a walk to the edge of a 1 km wide (0.6 mi) volcano crater, a breath-taking chasm with spectacular views. Numerous tour guides operate here. Be sure to wear proper hiking footwear, and if possible, hiking poles. As with all strenuous hikes, bring plenty of water. • 1. Introduction Liamuiga is a dormant volcano that gets its name from Kalinago (the Native name for the island meaning “fertile island”). The crater is about 1 mile in diameter and has a depth of abou...  more »
  • I’ve been wanting to do this hike for a while and it did not disappoint at all! Such a great climb up to the summit, climbing over rocks and exposed roots, under and over fallen tree trunks, through h...  more »
  • Good hike, I did it with my dad and he is 68, so not very complicated. You just need good shoes as it is mostly in real rain forest. I don’t know, why someone needs guide, it is single trail without a...  more »

  • If you like to hike in 6" deep of mud, uphill on a poorly manicured trail go for it. Although the 2oz Dixie cup of iced juice was refreshing, I surely wouldn't consider dry white bread with yellow American cheese, lettuce, tomato, ("oh sorry we just ran out of ham")served on the gate of a pickup after the 5 hour hike to count as "lunch provided". Also, when they said we would get a rest at the top we were hoping for at least 5 mins but the guides were in a hurry to get us back on time. I will say the guides were pleasant but this excurtion leaves much to be desired.
  • We hiked to the top of the mountain with a guide. It definitely requires you to be in good shape. The hike is reasonably steep, and can be challenging. I think it took us about 2 hours to reach the top at a reasonably casual pace. That said, the view at the top was great. It was cloudy when we were there, but we still loved it. You can see all the way into the crater, and to the rim on the other side. I'd imagine on a more clear day the view is significantly better.
  • DO NOT TAKE THIS EXCURSION FROM ROYAL CARIBBEAN! I hiked this volcano. I am in good shape. I exercise for an hour or more 3-5 days a week. I lift weights... I am athletic. I hike. I usually go trail hiking in the Appalachian mountains. The volcano trail itself, on the volcano is about 2 miles and then the trail to the trail to the volcano is about a mile. In total the hike is about 8 miles, according to the pedometer on my phone. Royal Caribbean schedules the excursion for 6 hours, which stresses the tour guides, because they have to be on time. The tour guides will rush you on a treacherous and muddy trail that is often 6 inches wide at places, with huge boulders as well. it is not mountain hiking, it is mountain climbing. The degree grade is about 30% if I had to guess. sometimes, it probably pushes 70% especially the last half mile toward the summit. Making that ascent and descent at that speed on that trail is not safe for amateurs and should only be done by serious mountaineers and not by children. Children can become exhausted and can suddenly experience cardiac or respiratory complications and radical decompensation (shock). This is not a safe excursion during rainy season. Subtract 2 hours for travel, one hour each way. You must complete this 8 mile round trip in 4 hours with minimal breaks. The beginning of the trail is humid and is very taxing to start a mountain climb with few breaks, that last about 30 seconds. The humidity in the beginning makes the rest of the ascent that much more challenging. The trail is not as well groomed as I would expect. It was more overgrown than I would have thought. With such a popular trail, I would hope that they errect some more stable and permanent assistive structures (IE a railing) on the trail, instead of slack and knotted rope. The tour company handed us cold cut turkey sandwiches on white bread for lunch with a 2 oz Dixie cup of lemonade. Not worth $129. G-d bless my guide. I would not have made it to the top without her.
  • Very cool view from the top. It's about 3.5 miles to the top. I would recommend using a guide. Also have a good set of hiking shoes and take plenty of water. It can be a little treacherous with all the slipper rocks and tree roots.
  • Interesting, but I wouldn't go back to St. Kitts. There are better islands.
