At Udawalawe National Park, 165 km (103 mi) east of Sri Lanka's capitol, explore the sanctuary for wild animals that were once displaced during the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River. Established on in 1972, the reserve covers 308 sq km (119 sq mi). Observe one of park's biggest attractions--elephants--along with jungle cats, monkeys, crocodiles, and other wildlife. After taking a safari, visit the orphanage where professional caretakers nurse baby animals and release them into the wild as they reach maturity. • This is the closest national park to Colombo. Around 3-4 hours drive from Colombo. Most common attraction here is the wild elephants. There are deer, wild boar and many birds can be easily seen. Few leopards in here and we are lucky enough to see one. Best time to see the animals are in the early hours from 6.00sm to 11.00am and then after 3.00pm. Few government maintained bungalows inside the park where you able to stay overnight. But facilities in these bungalows are very limited.
  • A very nice safari. Gotta love the elephants, these magnificent creatures. Bumpy roads but nice view nice nature and many elephants to see. The wait to get in is long and boring but it's definitely worth it, also getting up at 5 o clock let's you see the sun rise
  • Fantastic and love it. Foreigner fees are 260% more than locals. Lot of wild elephants spotted everywhere and our safari driver was great, cautious and informative. You would spend minimum of 2.5 hours in the forest. Highly recommended.
  • Nice park. Nature is looking great. You'll get to see elephants and other wild animals. Early in the morning it's okay. But it'll get crowded soon. To may cars with only two passengers instead of six available seats. Entrance process isn't thought through. If the would do it more efficiently, both nature and visitors would be grateful.
  • First Safari we have done. This was fantastic, never knew you could get within touching distance of wild elephants. I counted up to 24 then stopped counting. We saw 6 month old elephant feeding from its mother. Crocodiles, jackal, mongoose, deer, milk and rock turtle, fish owl, water buffalo and many birds. We paid just over 8,000 rupees for two adults and driver for entrance fee, then 8,000 rupees for 6 hours tour. Well worth the money. We did notice a difference in the drivers taking tours, some were just driving around, ours knew all the places to go and took us off the beaten track. He spotted things that other drivers did not see, he was a friend of the person we stayed with, do worth looking for a good guide.
