4.5/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web
A peaceful, well-kept oasis of silence on the road between Upaveli and Nilaveli, Trincomalee War Cemetery preserves memories of British soldiers and auxiliary staff who perished during World War II. This serene, meticulously maintained location has graves of Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists alike, all of whom died during the last days of the war. An excellent gardener with a family tradition, the caretaker here has a wealth of information, and ensures every grave has a different flowering shrub. As you stroll the grounds, keep an eye out for occasional wildlife such as lizards and monkeys.
