4.5/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web
Perched on a rocky crag, Mulgirigala Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple comprised of Buddha statues and five compounds. Built in the third century, the structure has withstood time amazingly well and has seen visits from numerous kings throughout its history. The statues include lying, sitting, and standing figures of Buddha, with Kandy-era wall paintings based on Jataka stories decorating many of the temple walls. Guides will wait at the entrance and offer to show you around, but make sure to get the best price before accepting. Plan your visit to Mulgirigala Raja Maha Vihara and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Tangalle trip builder.

  • After I had first some concerns about the rise of (belong to the older term) I can now give all-clear. Good ones because there is a railing and especially since the caves at various levels are and you have time to rest so again and again with normal condition. Also during our visit, there were no tourists except for some locals and a Buddhist monk group and therefore enough leisure to view beautiful wall and ceiling paintings. A completely worthwhile outing destination!
