Sigiriya World Heritage Site, Sigiriya
(4.5/5 based on 2,200+ reviews on the web)
Visit the historic complex of Sigiriya World Heritage Site, an ancient city centered around a massive stone plateau. King Kasyapa selected the spot to be the nation’s capital in the 5th century, and built his palace on top of the enormous, 200 m (660 ft) tall rock. You’ll need to climb more than a thousand steps to reach the summit and admire the ruins of Sri Lanka’s oldest palace. Peer over the edge to observe the gardens below, a marvel of urban planning, featuring still-functional fountains. Along the way, you can see the remains of the gate--once shaped like a lion’s head--as well as numerous ancient frescoes. Arrange your visit to Sigiriya World Heritage Site and discover more family-friendly attractions in Sigiriya using our Sigiriya vacation route planner.

  • The lawns at entry are lush green with rare bird species. Photography meets nature. 1000-1200 steps to reach the top. A little difficult for oldies. The view is mesmerizing. All one can see is flora a...  more »
  • They say that there is a mountain to the side which is free, and over I can say that the visit is expensive, but I do not think you will enjoy or half that of the original mountain. It is an indispensable visit Sri Lanka place, and if you don't have vertigo is required to climb to the top to admire the landscape and the ancient city. That said, indispensable in Sri Lanka.
