Pidurangala Rock, Sigiriya

4.8
#2 of 16 in Things to do in Sigiriya
Hike up Pidurangala Rock, a geological feature offering extensive views of the verdant hilly landscape and an atmosphere of seclusion and contemplation. Standing opposite a larger, more frequented hill, the rock possesses a different charm to its touristy brother, with a quiet and peaceful Buddhist temple at its foot, and a giant reclining Buddha statue in a secluded cave part way up. The ascent takes around half an hour, with a medium difficulty scramble over some boulders near the top, so wear suitable footwear. The views from the top make the exertion worthwhile. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Sigiriya holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Pidurangala Rock and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • In my opinion, this is a nicer view than sigiryia. It costs 500r/s and is a temple at the bottom so bring something to cover shoulders! I had long trousers and a tshirt but when we got to the top peop...  more »
  • Pidurangala really is worth a visit. Entry is 500 rupees. There’s a small temple at the start, so you will need to remove hats and shoes if you want to go inside. Otherwise it’s about 20 mins walk up ...  more »
  • It is a cheaper option than the rock of Sigiriya (500 lkr per person), although the ascent begins as something simple-based steps and is complicating, ultimately is a rise between huge rocks overlapping each other and somewhat dangerous, not very suitable if you are with nin you or you have some kind of weakness or handicap, although once up the views are of infarction with the Sigiriya in the foreground just across the street. If you were to see the dawn or the fall of the Sun it is essential to carry some type of flashlight or the mobile charged to use the built-in to the road.

  • A walk along a forest trail to an isolated rock with panoramic views. Great view of Lion's rock with .01% of the tourist traffic. Climb if you are young or fit or not so fit but have determination. Trail is marked with painted arrows along the upper section over the rocks.
  • Climb here early in the morning to see the sunrise and the Sigiriya rock at dawn. It's quite an easy hike, mainly steps. It gets a bit rough at the end where you have to climb few big stones but nothing an averagely fit person wouldn't be able to do. It took us about 20-25 minutes to get on top. You don't really need a guide but you might get confused at the end in the dark so if you're alone just tag along a group with the guide, there's always someone early in the morning. The entrance is 500 Rupees.
  • One of finest hiking and rock climbing, and best view of the Sigiriya is recommended. Wonderful nature with cool wind i had 2 hours of sleep on top of the Pidurangala rock and enjoyed the Sun set.
  • The climb was quite adrenalineful, especially the last highest part but otherwise I really enjoyed it. I recommend wearing sturdy shoes, even though some individuals wore flip flops or were even barefoot. What seems like a great idea is seeing the sunset up there which is beautiful, but don't forget you have to go back and it's not the easiest task in dark.
  • Take a water bottle with you and please don't litter the area by putting them here and there. More you climb it harder your journey gets 😂 but after reaching the top of the rock you will get a glamorous view of the whole area..
