Gal Vihara, Polonnaruwa
Categories: Monuments, Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Discover the fascinating 12th-century rock temple of the Buddha at Gal Vihara. The temple houses four beautiful statues of the Buddha, all carved from the same, single piece of granite. Admire the statues, which demonstrate some of the finest examples of Sinhalese rock carving. Wander around the temple and admire the standing Buddha, which measures 7m (23 ft) in height. However, unique features on this statue have led to heavy speculation that it could depict not the Buddha, but in fact one of his disciples, Ananda. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings as you appreciate the three other statues in the temple; the seated Buddha, the reclining Buddha, and Vidyhadhara Guha. Shoes are forbidden within the site, so bring some socks to walk across the sometimes hot ground. We also left us impressed by the beauty of the four images that can be seen in the complex, all of them carved in the same stone in four separate granite blocks. The more spectacular of the Buddhas is which has greater size (seven meters of height). It is made with so much realism that draws attention to their expression of sorrow or grief on his face. The position of the arms is also curious if we compare it with other sculptures of Buddha that we have seen. Of the other three Buddhas that can be seen, which is lying, with its 14 meters, is also spectacular and worthy to admire details offering. The two seated Buddhas are less showy but contribute to make the whole only. It is places that should not be missed if you go to see the ruins of Polonnaruwa. Greetings to all travelers.show original
