#4 of 13 in Nature in Nuwara Eliya
St. Clair's Falls (සාන්ත ක්ලෙයාර් ඇල්ල) is one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and is commonly known as the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka". It is one of six waterfalls affected by the Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project. The falls are situated west of the town of Talawakele on the Hatton-Talawakele Highway in Nuwara Eliya District. The falls are located along the Kotmale River, a tributary of the Mahaweli River, as it cascades over three rock outcrops into a large pool, running through a tea estate, from which the falls derive their name from. The waterfalls consist of two falls called "Maha Ella" (Sinhalese "The Greater Fall"), which is high and wide and "Kuda Ella", (Sinhalese "The Lesser Fall"), which is high and located immediately downstream of the main fall. St Clair's falls are the 20th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka.Environmentalists concernsFrom the inception of the Upper Kotmale Project, Sri Lanka's last major hydro-electricity project, the environmentalists protested concerning that the waterfall is threatened by the Upper Kotmale Dam. The falls are located 2.2km downstream from the dam. The Government however has stated that they will release a limited quantity of water to ensure a continuous flow of water over the falls for 10 hours and 30 minutes daily, between sunrise and sunset.

  • A magnificent water fall but had been changed due to upstream development activities. The full flow of the water fall can only be observed when the sluice gates of the upstream dam are open and while spilling is maintained. A landscape photographer's dream when the flow is complete.
  • Beautiful site destroyed by man....now only a shadow of original beauty can be seen. Even in with heavy rains the fall does not get much water as it get water only through a relatively small pipe. The efficiency of the project is also doubtful in whether they can ever work to their full capacity, because the tank cannot store more water which leads to flooding in Thalawakele...
  • You will find a spectacular view from the service center near St. Clair's falls. Cafe is clean and tidy. General public are not allowed to use the washrooms and you should purchase products from the cafe to use the same. I bought a bottle of water and got access to the washroom. It was horrible and disgusting experience.
  • One of the most beautiful Waterfall in Sri Lanka. You can get fine views of this specially when you are traveling by train to Badulla. It can be seen this waterfall when you are traveling through the Hatton - Nuwara Eliya road also.
  • Great three storey fall easily visible and viewable from the main road. A recommended stop for a few pictures
