Pedro Tea Factory , Nuwara Eliya

Take a guided tour through Pedro Tea Factory and wander around the plantation fields. Built in 1885, the factory still holds some of its original machinery, although all of the production processes take place at night, meaning you can't see them in action. Nevertheless, you can learn a lot about the history of the factory, the methods used to produce the tea, and, of course, sample some fine tea products at the end. Rest at the onsite cafe and take pictures of the area's lush green landscape. Plan trip to Nuwara Eliya with our itinerary maker to find out where to go and what to do.

  • Our guide was friendly and the factory interesting. It did feel like we learnt the rudiments of the process and given we only had a limited time, this worked for us. If you want a more in depth bus-to...  more »

  • Fantastic experience picking tea! All kitted up with bags on our back and cagoules we went out into the plantation and picked tea. Would have been good to weigh what we picked to see how well we did. We were able to taste the tea in the cafe and it was available for purchase in the shop. Lovely, but relatively short experience.
  • Not one of the best factories around. If you have time, then go further and explore more factories. Apparently the time I came, i was told that the factory machines weren't operational, however they will offer to take you to show you the whole process. There's a tea boutique close to it, situated in picturesque tea gardens. One can also buy tea boxes as gifts. Do take a walk around the tea gardens, the view of the reservoir from there is simply beautiful.
  • My favourite tea plantation in the area. For R200 we took a tour of the new factory (from maybe the 1950’s - original machinery is also on site though). The guide was knowledgable and there were maybe 20 people in our tour group. After this you are offered tea in the shop as part of the initial cost, which you can drink overlooking the plantation. There doesn’t seem to be a big expectation to give tips (they have materials up in the shop about being a responsible employer / business). The loos are decent too. This doesn’t take long, maybe 20-30mins, so we went for a walk through the plantation down towards the lake which was scenic. Great to combine with a walk to Lover’s Leap waterfall - the start of the walk is over the main road.
  • Visit here last week. It was a great experience. A guide form the factory nicely explained the process of plucking tea leaves to packaging. After the guided tour we were served with a cup of tea.
  • Magnificant experience of tea tasting surrounded by plantations. Great welcoming, beautiful views, very tasty teas. Had a walk through plantation and looked at tea picking process with local tea pickers. Pedro factory has very sustainable production policies. Charming estate very close to Nuwara Eliya. Do not miss it if you are there!
