Granted, it can be very busy on Pigeon Island. The beautiful fish are accustomed to so much interest to see, they are absolutely not people so shy! But the beauty of the underwater world near Pigeon Island is very well.

Booked the snorkelling trip through our hotel, who arranged with a diving school to take us on a 4hour morning trip at Pigeon island. 3500 Sri lankan ruphees per person (includes boat ride & gear hire...  more »

We were there 2x(1xfrüh+1xspät)Schnorcheln u have booked at the diving center at our hotel (pigeon Island beach resort). There also all snorkel equipment can be rented. Here, we would especially mention in particular Ravi has super organized all of our tours. The relatively high Preis(~30€ p.P.) also arises that the Sri Lankanische with strong conceded State at the entrance because it is just a national park. Would be desirable if the money goes to good... also nature conservation? The many dead corals have bothered us too, but at least the entrance next to the boat dock in the "Shark Bay" is protected must not enter u / "be snorkeling" are. Here we have to admire turtles up close some reef sharks u. A more Bay is located on the back of the island (also suitable for children) in a variety of fish can be admired. The length of stay on the island can be arranged with boaters. We were both 4Std,was for us was just right. Between 10 am-3 pm is the most wrong. Before 10: 00, the rush in borders u from 16: 00 keeps being turtles as well as alone on the Insel.Haie u could be seen to any time of day. Be sure to take water, slippers u underwater camera. We had a cheap waterproof cell phone cover, which is filming / photograph can u has proved very good, always there. On the island, there is no way to buy something.

The most beautiful corals in the world exist right here under the water surrounding Pigeon island. With fish, coral, sharks, turtle and an absolutely majestic beach Pigeon Island is a treat unmatched. The one suggestion for everyone is to go there as early as possible in the morning to avoid the rush. Nothing like a peaceful snorkeling session under the rising sun.

Beautiful little island, you can snorkel on two sides. One is just fish and coral, the other is also turtles and sharks! Saw a few sharks while there, including a baby one swimming right next to the beach. Big turtles too. It was pretty crowded though, better get here first thing it opens, that's when you see more sharks too.

Beautiful island. Quite commercial. You can see some coral here and if you are lucky you will snorkel with sharks! There are allegedly more then 30 of them. One minus point for owercrowdines.

Snorkelling is phenominal, saw turtles and sharks. Nice cash cow, national park staff sit there watching videos on there phones. Bring flip flops as the amount of dead coral is staggering. Wont be the same place in 5 years

Beautiful little island with an amazing variety of fish. Snorkelling in the early hours of the morning is much easier with less tides and current, perfect for watching fish. More varities of sea life to see on the to left to where the boats land rather than on the other side.

Where to stay in Nilaveli

Nilaveli's lodgings lie between the coastal Nilaveli Road and the sea. Looking to outdo one another for sea views, the hotels here have plenty to offer by way of location, with none situated too far from the sand. Additional facilities vary depending on price, with some particularly well appointed retreats offering private pools, spas, and veranda restaurants, while the humbler options let the coastline speak for itself.
