St. Mary's Church, Negombo

4.2/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web
Dedicated to the Mother of God, St. Mary's Church offers a chance for visitors to see and learn how Christianity endured a turbulent history and persecution in India. During the 18th century, Catholic priests weren't allowed to hold sermons or perform rituals, so they arranged secret meetings in small huts. In one of them, the main priest performed miracles and cured patients by his prayers to the Virgin Mary, which ultimately enabled the community to construct the church nearby in 1863. Today, the neoclassical edifice stands tall with columns and plain walls, attracting both tourists and devotees alike. Examine statues of saints, altars imported from Europe, and the portrayal of Christ's life on the ceiling--the work of a local Buddhist painter.
