Flowing through the heart of the city, Dutch Canal once acted as an important transportation and trading route. Today, the long canal still allows transportation, but mostly for tourists looking for a unique way to explore the city. Various tour operators conduct boat tours on the canal, which typically include several stops along the way and end at Negombo Lagoon. Alternatively, approach a local boatman to inquire about a tour. Put Dutch Canal at the forefront of your travel plans using our Negombo travel itinerary maker.

Where to stay in Negombo

Its proximity to the airport and its coastline mean that Negombo now offers a long list of places to stay. The mix of accommodations in town remains pretty good, with the focus of many lying understandably on the coast. Family-run guesthouses and welcoming homestays provide the best options for those looking for budget-friendly accommodations, with some right on the beachfront, and others just behind on the side streets, nestled among shops and restaurants. Luxury options come in the form of resorts, set both on the beach and on the side of tree-lined boulevards inland.

  • For me not worth visiting. It was nice just walking by, but nothing special to see. For me it's just there, just as in the picture.  more »
  • Interesting from the fact that the Dutch built a 200Km long canal down the coast for transporting goods. However it is not pretty and is absolutely full of rubbish like a dustbin.  more »
