4.1/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web
Admire the 6 m (19.5 ft) tall Buddha statue at Angurukaramulla Temple, before entering to see colorful paintings and sculptures. At the very entrance, you'll see a sculpture of dragon, which protects the temple from evil spirits. Step inside and you'll find yourself surrounded by ancient murals, paintings, and colorfully adorned deities, especially on the ceiling of the shrine room. The temple tells the stories of the queens and kings who used to rule the country, as well as depicting Buddha’s journey to enlightenment. Trees surround the temple, and in the center you can see a pond full of turtles. A monk will take you on a free tour around the temple, although you might be expected to make a small donation and sign the guest book. • I have seen many temples during my years of travelling all over the world but this is one of the best. Why? Because of the wallpaintings and statues. I was speechless, so beautiful. You'll walk around...  read more »
  • Seen from afar, a huge Buddha statue which overlooks the sacred place dedicated to him. It is not allowed to photograph the Buddha figure with people. We remove our shoes and enter this in the temple split into a quadrangular hall surrounding two rooms, a front panel with three Buddha, an altar full of flowers and a rear that houses a statue of a large sleeping Buddha which is assisted by "Angels". Each element within the building's colorful, there are frescoes relating to the life and especially the life of the Buddha and his exploits, statues of him in its various events. This place lives of charity and tipping, I invite you to mention this before you leave. Outside there is also a "Sunday School" where children learn the teachings of the Buddha.

  • This Buddhist temple is from outside on the large Buddha image under the canopy and from within by the many beautiful and colorful images. One of the precious few sights in the unexciting Negombo.
