Polhena Beach, Matara

(3/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Snorkel through 4 km (2.5 mi) of heavenly coral reef at Polhena Beach. You'll see an abundance of tropical fish and sea turtles as you move through the shallow water and beyond to the reef. The sea's gradual increase in depth leaves plenty of shallows for the kids to splash around in, while you make your way out towards the reef. Enjoy the music and frivolity of local visitors to the beach, which also provides a parking lot and restaurants, where you can rest from the sun's rays and grab a bite. Make Polhena Beach a part of your Matara vacation plans using our Matara trip itinerary maker.

  • A sandy beach that is clean and great for swimming and snorkeling. The coral is within easy reach from the beach and not too deep. Good for beginners.  more »
  • This place is a marvel, you see different fishes also colored and you can spend hours to swim with the turtles! We went Sunday mid-morning and we had been told that the beach would have been full of locals. So it was but it made the experience unforgettable. After swimming with also 3 turtles (WOW!!) local children intrigued approached to ask us for names and complimentary iced as pieces of coral! And so we shared a couple of hours with the local families eating ice cream and playing football, many also got photos and we were invited to go to their homes in Sri Lanka.
