  • Udawattekele can be reached by walking from Kandy but it is uphill, a tuktuk cost us £1.50 and we walked back down. The forest has well marked tracks to follow, is quiet and shaded and very enjoyable....  more »
  • This is a nice area that you easy reach with tuk-tuk. There are good paths so you can walk with a stroller. Nice forest and fine viewpoint over Kandy. Monkeys, pigs, deer, turtles, water monitor were ...  more »
  • Spent an afternoon walking around in the park. Saw a bunch of monkeys, some deer and wild boar. Lovely walks in the woods.

  • This sanctuary is a beautiful place to visit in kandy. If u r so tired with the kandy crowd and need a place to rest or make you calm, this is the best place. Walking distance from kandy town. Can see many birds in there. There is a beautiful kandy view point. If u can find bicycles ,there is a bicycle root in the sanctuary and you can have so much fun riding through the jungle.
  • It's a good contrast to the city but costs 650rp for tourists but 30rp for locals, the issue is you don't get anything for the money, the map is completely wrong, no signposts so we ended up going in circles 3 times and no conservation happening at all. If you want a walk in the forest then it's fine, see some monkeys but don't expect anything else
  • It's an old forest,be careful mistake way,a little long way,and difficult to find anybody, but very good if you want to be alone. You can find monkey always, and there is view point at the gate near temple of teeth, you can view all kandy city and lake. Not bad. Good for lovers.
  • Probably the first declared sanctuary after becoming a British colony in 1815 , it is not an exaggeration to say that it is the lungs of the kandy city. many attempts to cut a road through this forest were thwarted by public in recent past.
  • Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, often spelled as Udawattakele, is a historic forest reserve on a hill-ridge in the city of Kandy. It is 104 hectares (257 acres) large. During the days of the Kandyan kingdom, Udawatta Kele was known as "Uda Wasala Watta" in Sinhalesemeaning "the garden above the royal palace". The sanctuary is famous for its extensiveavifauna. The reserve also contains a great variety of plant species, especially lianas, shrubs and small trees. There are several giant lianas. Many of small and medium size mammals that inhabit Sri Lanka can be seen here. Several kinds of snakes and other reptiles might be seen. Udawatta Kele was designated as a forest reserve in 1856, and it became a sanctuary in 1938
